R is for Rainbow

This week, Lauren and I have had every afternoon to play, color, paint and practice letters together (Mommy, let’s set-up Minnie Mouse’s pre-school!) while Ash and Sarah are off at school. For awhile now, she has been writing her name as “Lolo” and while it remains the most adorable thing ever, it’s not proper and let’s face it, it’s not her “real” name.

So, we’ve made it to the “R” in Lauren. We had to call in some reinforcement to remember the name of that guy. Luckily, we have stamps and paint and extra sized paper on hand.

_MG_0009-Edit

We sang our way through “Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Purple” throughout the entire stamping process. And chanted “R is for rainbow” over and over until I think it took some effect.

Since rainbows are so fun, we took some time to create one on her little toes, too. I wish I had yellow and green nail polish around when I was a kid. Of course, there wasn’t Target, Coolest Store Ever, to buy these unique and happy items at.

See, a happy LauRen!

Dress-up Those Dollar Spot Finds

Every once in awhile, I spy some super cute packs of pre-made cards that catch my eye at Michaels or Target- and they only cost $1! Recently, I was gifted with a pack and because I have so much guilt using pre-made cards, they sat in my craft drawer for awhile. Until, I pulled them out and thought, it’s time to dress these guys up.

It’s easy to do when you have a plethora of crafty supplies on hand: ribbon, pretty paper and doodads. Take a look below- the original design appears first and the dressed-up cards are easy to detect below them.

_MG_9395_MG_9396_MG_9453_MG_9454On the backside of the pre-made dollar spot find it was plain aqua/turquoise-ish blue and I thought outside of the box and cut the card in two (hey, bonus- a 2fer!), so the above card is the front side and card below uses the backside. I think this might be by most favorite color combination (and the doily makes me smile, too):

_MG_9455Alrighty, up for a weekend challenge? Go grab a pack of dollar spot cards(there’s a good excuse for a Target stop today!) and get them dressed up! Let me know if you do, I’d love to see what you create!

Everyone’s Irish on March 17th

St. Patrick’s Day didn’t go unnoticed in these parts. It was a day of wearing GREEN!, trying to catch leprechauns, rainbow butterflies and even better- RAINBOW cupcakes! I think  my parents thought I was nuts when the littles and I made these in the afternoon, but they were worth the time, the girls LOVED them.

Here’s Ash wearing almost head-to-toe green before pre-school. She’s imitating a little Irish dancer,  I think:

Untitled-7Her leprechaun trap wasn’t successful  (see those cheery little guys dancing beside it?) but it was a big hit when she shared it with her friends at school:

The infamous rainbow cupcakes (thank you Family Fun!), they were magically delightful to look at:

_MG_6293-EditMy aunt and I put together this butterfly mobile thing that was meant solely for decorations. It wound up being a little bit of a headache because the butterflies get all twisted up inside of one another when the slightest change of air current, but it sure is purty… especially in afternoon light:

Untitled-8It was such a beautiful day outside so I chased these little ones around for a bit. I  love that it’s the middle of March and warm enough for short sleeves, bike riding and long walks. An accidental shot that is out of focus and not  framed well, but something about it- I just can’t bring myself to delete it, so I’ll share it:

Card Swap + a Winner!

My friend Katy was hosting a card swap for a group of scrapbooking friends of mine- you KNOW I had to jump in on that fun! There was a total of  19 ladies that were apart of the swap- so we rounded it out to an even 20 and will send an extra one to Cards for Kids. When I designed this card, I was itching to try some 3D type flowers and also getting eager for Spring! I love that I remembered that I had tulle on hand leftover from Ashleigh’s bird costume. Mary Jo, another crafty mama friend, sent me some darling butterflies punched out when I lived in San Diego and she pretty much forced me to buy this punch. You can’t tell, but the butterfly is also 3D-ish. I feel like this is so simple and yet, so out of my box. I love it. I hope my friends will, too!

Happiness is… a small army of cards lined up!

_MG_5874-EditOn that note, let’s not forget the celebration of {decorate your soul}’s 10,000th comment and almost 1,000th post. Insert sound bite for drum roll for a $16 Target gift card (thanks Brandy for pointing out I should use random. org and get with the 21st century use of the Internet)…. and the winner is:

Yea for Jill! I’m glad to help you bring a little spring to the northern parts via Target :) I’ll get that little gem in the mail to you this week :) Thanks for being such fun readers out there in the blogosphere!

Handmade Valentines from my {heart}

Did you get into the {hearts} and love fest over these past couple of weeks? What better way to share with those you love than a handmade Valentine? A few of mine that should be safe to showcase here for all of my loved ones should have received theirs by today (phew!)…

This first one was inspired by a card posted on Write. Click. Scrapbook. Those buttons aren’t as easy to set up in a {heart} as you might think :

_MG_4577In this second card, I love these little birdies together, and I really love them on pop dots. To get a this look, you stamp directly on the background paper, use a second sheet, stamp the body again and Xacto out the silhouette . Pop dot the birdy above the legs.

Untitled-16Andy called this next one my  ”Love Behind Bars” card. I think the hearts on string was a fun touch- I’ve showed the inside of the card on the right so you can see how I camouflaged the string behind the front. This can easily be switched out for other themes, I think. Topping my mental list is a polka dot card!

Untitled-14In this fourth card, a simple and quick card was created  with scraps (I think this may have been better with markers, alas, I only have colored pencils on hand):

Untitled-13This quick and super simple design was inspired from a layout that my friend Elizabeth has done before with folded ribbon under some text. I can’t seem to find the link tonight for her layout, but I can assure you, you can make this quick and easy card in under five minutes :) Hallmark cards have nothing on you!

Untitled-15Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends :) Thank you for stopping by!

Valentine’s Candy Boxes (& a mini-tutorial)

Last Friday, I suggested to the girls that we get started on Valentine’s for their classes- I thought both girls would have parties on Friday before V-day, but as it turns out, one was today and two are tomorrow. Needless to say, we had a good amount of time to prep and I’m a little bit on Valentine overload today (we threw together something entirely different for Lo’s class). But, these boxes are too cute not to share and if you’re in a crunch at midnight tonight, you can check to see if you have the main ingredients on hand and make a few of your own for parties tomorrow!

Last fall, I went to a Stampin’ Up party at my friend Beverly’s and one of the projects we made  were these adorable little candy boxes. Someone (Sarah) didn’t forget about these and she grabbed the token one we had and presented it to me. She wanted to bring to her classmates. How could I not say yes- we had EVERYthing except the candy to make them:

_MG_4402_MG_4413I’m a little squeamy with the cute overload here- wait until we get to the pink ones…

When the boxes open,  they are just as darling as can be, holding four Hershey nugget candies:

Untitled-9

You can even stamp on letter labels and wrap the chocolate up to personalize them- the girls had a fabulous time doing this part (actually, the stamping was ALL them):

Untitled-10Here is a quick shot of my little helpers all hard at work last weekend:

I know you want to make your own, so here’s how:

Valentine Candy Boxes Tutorial

Untitled-11

Materials:

Ribbon

2 sheets of 4 X 5 cardstock (scored 1″ on all sides)

stamps!

letter labels

double sided tape

Ready, set, go!

1. Using two pieces of 4″ X 5″ cardstock, score all sides with a 1″ margin (picture left below). Fold on the lines.

2. Cut 1″ on the fold of the longer sides toward center four times to create the bottom of the box (picture left below). Set aside.

3. For the top of the box, you will cut off the back fold of the corners to create a square missing and cut 1″ into the crease on the fold on the long side (picture right below). This is a good time to stamp your image on the top of the box above the bottom fold line.

Untitled-124. Wow. Typing tutorials are kind of tough.

5. Using double sided tape, place it on the inside of either end of the bottom part of the box (in between cuts) and fold corners in:

_MG_4526

6. Lift the flap and it will adhere to the smaller corners already folded in. Repeat on other end of the box.

_MG_4527The bottom will look like this once you have both sides up:

_MG_45297. What step am I on? Shoot.

8. Okay, back to the top of the box. Take the scored sides and fold them all down, the front corners will be tucked under the outside flaps. Place double sided tape there on the little corner.

_MG_4522_MG_45249. Decorate top with ribbon, adhere  across and under the top lid if desired. I had used glue dots under the ribbon, but wound up reinforcing with regular tape under the lid.

_MG_4533

_MG_453510. Almost done, stick with me here :)

11. Flip the top of the box upside down and add a piece of double sided tape to the back flap. Then you will adhere it to one of the longer sides of the bottom part of the box to connect the two:

_MG_4544

_MG_4547

_MG_4548Once you close the box top, you’re complete with your Valentine Candy box. You can stamp the labels and wrap them around the nuggets later. Or eat them and stuff the box with an IOU. Don’t you deserve it? Good  job!

:D

Tapping in

I love crafty crafts and playing with paper. I haven’t tapped into my creative side on a regular basis for awhile so I’ve declared (for me) 2010 the year of the paper crafts comeback! After a stop at the Columbus Archivers last Friday, I came home with oodles of color and motivation to kick off this year right. My friend Katy and I are committed to come away this December with a slew of new layouts and some new card swaps for the year. Stay tuned!

Here is our family Christmas card (created way back in September!):

I personally loved the non-traditional colors and pop of pink and polka dots from the patterned paper (that I ran out of) (and then couldn’t find ANYwhere):Untitled-3

I hope you’re not too over Christmas just yet, here’s a second card that I created with my Bible study table- we had so much fun, we’re 5 card workshopping it soon!

_MG_0775

Recently, I signed up for a Big Picture Scrapbooking Class called Inspiration Defined. I’m excited to tap into the loads of inspiration on the web and around our world… here’s a card I created for some New Year’s wishes inspired by a color combo from Jeni (At Home in Georgia):

Untitled-2I typically would not have put red with any form of aqua, but here it works, no?

Here’s to a brand new year and lots of inspiration and craftiness to tap into- won’t you join me?

Bring on the Spirit: Making Ornaments

For the past couple of years, the girls have had  some opportunities to tap into their creative side and create or decorate an ornament for our tree. Before that , I was the crazy lady that wanted the perfectly dressed matchy-matchy ornament tree (like Macy’s trees!) but have softened up over the years (mostly because the glass ornament bulbs break leaving us with a disaster on the floor) and have welcomed the addition of our kids’ handprint made reindeer, the round, overstuffed neon ornaments with puffballs and even the cheapy can’t-pass-up-wood-ornament-deal from Joanns.

This week, these little paint me ornaments were 40% off so I grabbed about a dozen or so thinking they would make great stocking stuffers for someone. By the way, did you know that stocking stuffers are the new BIG thing? I could have told you tha 20 years ago, I LOVE stocking stuffers. Anyway, back to making ornaments. The girls just loved spending the afternoon painting, and choosing colors that were JUST right for their yearly ornament.

Untitled-8_MG_2265-EditUntitled-9They were pretty excited with the results. Can you figure out what Lauren’s basic ornament was?She worked on this guy for a very long time. Here’s her masterpiece-  it’s a present.

_MG_2278-EditAshleigh is our budding artist in the bunch- she really takes her time in art projects and uses her creativity wonderfully:

_MG_2274-EditSarah came home later in the afternoon and painted her own Christmas tree, but it hasn’t been photographed. But it’s here.

The girls were having such a great time, I thought maybe I could pass off one of the 40 cent wood ornaments off as my ornament for tonight’s book club / ornament exchange / cookie exchange / Girls’ Night out shindig since Target failed to provide me with the perfect ornament to buy. So I got to work painting, but apparently, I don’t have enough small motor control to keep my paint brush in the lines and it doesn’t look like the (perfectly) painted examples they have on display at the store:

_MG_2281-Edit

So what’s a girl to do? I grabbed my felt stash. And my embroidery floss (because I still have a ton leftover from my love of friendship bracelets circa summer 1999) (thanks, Anel) and got to work on this cute little guy that I grew attached to after spending last evening with:

Untitled-7Seriously, I think I have a crush on him.

And lest you believe I’m all creative and crafty I swiped him straight off this baby girl’s t-shirt. Darling little owls make me happy.

And so do homemade ornaments. Even if they don’t make our tree matchy-matchy and Macy’s looking perfect. It’s put together with little hands of love.

Ten on Tuesday.

1. Our Women’s Bible study group was canceled this morning, but we enjoy hanging out for two hours each Tuesday morning that we got together over here today to keep in rhythm. Food, fruit, fellowship and cards. A good combination on any account- even if cards doesn’t follow my alliterate sentence I was trying to create there). Here’s the beautiful women God has placed in my life this year (minus Ginger, our fearless leader):

_MG_0773-Edit(l-r: Becky (her Josiah is below left), Susy with Lolo, Dana with Adam, Ashleigh, Melanie, Janelle, and me)

2. My friend Denee’ and I are heading out to see New Moon tonight- I don’t feel like I’m over the top excited like most fifteen year olds, but the fact that we are going makes me feel like I’m fifteen-years-old. So, there’s that.

3.  The other day Sarah asked me if she could do the circle and find game. Wait for it.

4. I just put my name in the hat for a super cute necklace giveaway over at 60piggies. If you’re a fan of necklaces with words / names / sayings, run over and check out this crafty mamas Etsy shop!

5. I am looking forward to Christmas music next week. I have a strict rule (I have many rules come to think of it) that I don’t put anything up, play anything or send anything out Christmas related until December 1st. I have no idea why, but 25 days of Christmas cheer seems to be enough for me.

6.  Are you still wondering what circle and find game Sarah wanted to play? An old wordsearch. She loves finding words, just like her mama. I love that.

7. What are your turkey day plans? I have a date with the cutest chef ever and them Cowboys better show up and play a good game!

8. An exchange of e-mails with Suzi today resulted in a complaint of soreness (on my behalf) and  my favorite quote of late:

My thighs are sore…burning cottage cheese can be painful ;)

And if you know what cottage cheese is in regards to legs, than you might be chuckling at home, too. She’s too funny!

9. I’m almost done with Christmas cards – I only get to send 50 this year, so if you’re on the nice list, you may get one from us. But if you don’t, it’s probably because I cut down my list again this year.

10. I’ll leave you with a little crafty goodness from this morning:

Enjoy your Tuesday!

Under

_MG_0213

Under there is a dining room table.

It’s been in this state for about a week now.

I had the brilliant idea that I could handle pull off making two out of three costumes for my kids this year.

And little by little I did.

Of course, every great (or mediocre) Halloween costume has some story to tell behind it, right?

Like, hey, let’s add a bird’s nest to the already questionable bird costume that I’m making up as I go along (Martha’s instructions weren’t clear enough for me to follow along).

With a sewing maching that doesn’t flippin’ work.

No seriously, it does not work.  The end.

Something about thread, bobbins and tension. All verbage not in my limited sewing vocabulary apparently.

Thank you, God, for the invention of hot glue and embroidery floss, and friends that let me borrow their machine because you saved the little bit of sanity I hold onto.

The dining room will be moonlighting as a studio tomorrow, she should be back to her normal state by Tuesday.

Here’s hopin’.
