May 31: Remembering Them.

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9853The sheer amount of headstones representing our brave military servicemen and women is overwhelming to me at Arlington National Cemetery. I only requested one place to visit on Monday and after being there on this special holiday, I thought, there is no way I could move forward in years to come without reflecting on the men I saw that were there from years past that served our country. It is fresh in my memory- the elderly gentleman with shaky hands that I spoke with using a walker to hand out register your vet cards wearing ribbons from long ago wars. Another gentleman that was walking the length of the mall with his son and daughter that had to stop every few benches to rest, but was determined to reach his destination. The Band of Brothers trio- hearty and comical, but with hearts of gold committed to honoring and celebrating American soldiers. Hundreds of onlookers, a group wearing patriotic tie dye, my husband not complaining about the long walk with three kids in tow. This was by far one of the more meaningful afternoons I’ve spent in quite some time- one more way to remember how very blessed our nation is to have so many people that serve to protect and fight for ours, and other nations, freedom.

I am thankful.

May 30: Happy 7th Birthday, Sarah!

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9718-EditSarah has been pretty excited for the arrival of her 7th birthday this past Monday- so much so that she was announcing it to store clerks and strangers alike all last week. I swore up and down that she would wear this oversized hat all day to the zoo so she could enjoy many Happy Birthday wishes, but it wasn’t welcomed, being oversized and all. Luckily, she was ALL into her new Nintendo DS that Andy picked up for her as well as special cupcake treats, books, ant farms, an art activity set, colorful packages of clothes and a visit to her favorite clothing store that she didn’t miss out on bonus birthday wishes.

Despite the sweltering heat and humidity (yes, we have to add that in!) she had a VERY good 7th birthday.

May 29: Monkeying Around

_MG_9713-EditOne of the girls’ most favorite activities is to climb all over Andy. They fall into their old rhythm so quickly- they certainly have missed him!

May 28: Welcome to DC.

Having lived in a quiet suburban town for the past couple of years, I’ve forgotten how traffic can hold you up in big cities, not to mention delays caused by terrible car accidents. After a long day of driving to D.C . to visit Andy, the George Washington Memorial Highway halted to a stand still. We saw a sea of red beaming back in our direction. It was the unfortunate scene of emergency paired with a deep gratitude that we were protected on this leg of the drive. Noteworthy: This now falls into the top three worst rainfalls I’ve ever driven through.

May 27: On The Go.

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9633-EditI haven’t documented here how crazy our May has been trying to get Andy’s orders set up, but let me just say this: There’s been a lot of running around to and fro base including multiple phone calls, e-mails, & post-its. You name it, we’re trying to get out of Ohio. The base just wants MORE paperwork to be filled out. I’m not complaining, just stating the facts. I brought my camera to snap the hospital halls where we spent so much of Thursday (besides gymnastics/speech/ballet), but that darn rain had other plans. This shot more accurately described a harried day anyway- in the drive-thru trying to get everything fit in.

May 26: Brunch

We had our final gathering of our Bible study group at my friend Susy’s this morning. She made the most amazing brunch for our group and served our orange beverages in flute glasses- so fancy. Even Lauren got in on the deal… there are some advantages to being the only kid present, with a super trusting Susy!

May 25: Countdown to Summer

Ashleigh discovered all on her own that if you compress the sides of  the slip and slide down with your foot, you can create larger shots of water on the side of the unit. She thought it was SO cool. She kept holding it down driving her big sister crazy, and then got a little sassy about it and did a dance. This shot is SO much better in color, so I’m leaving it. They all had a wonderful afternoon and if I can make  some more time this week, I’ll get a few more posted of the girls’ fun! Summer’s just right around the corner, woot!

May 24: You Complete Me.

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9530-EditThis little gadget came into my life about 7 months ago. Andy and I spent some time contemplating getting it- the price was kind of high, but its benefits seem to far outweigh our reservations. We had been driving somewhere one afternoon last fall discussing where a food place was and we both said, “If we had an iPhone, we could get the address right now, ” and the same comment was made over and over about places to eat out of our area, or what was the weather in another town, etc. We finally decided to pony up and buy the amazing iPhone that the world was buzzing about.

And we love it. When we went to New York last December, Andy would whip that thing out and type in “Starbucks” and fifteen hundred would pop up and he could click on walking directions to the nearest one and we would instantly have access to a restroom and a coffee place- a good combination when you have three kids and  a cold mama. The iPhone would tell us which subway stop to take and exit when going from downtown to midtown. It has super cool things called “apps” that you can download (some free, some not free) that easily give reviews of restaurants in the area, provide juvenile games the girls could enjoy, tools that can be used to hang a photo frame level, etc. Our iPhone’s play our favorite music from our own, to Pandora, to the local radio station. We can get local weather or international weather. It tells me the time (I don’t wear a watch on a regular basis), it keeps my calendar dates straight, all of my contacts are handy and oh by the way, it’s my phone! I can talk on it and text! Nice.

To say that this little gadget is cool is an understatement. It has definitely changed some of the ways of doing around here, in mostly a good way. I joked with Andy one time that ‘his other wife’ was getting more attention than me- you can surf the web in these things, too, you see. I guess it’s embarrassing to admit that sometimes we sit on the sofa and do our own surfing on our own iPhones. It’s not super ideal to navigate, but it’s available. Anyway, if you’re on the fence about getting an iPhone and don’t have to sacrifice cable to get it (we miss cable, too), I highly recommend it. We love it.

May 23: Town Hall Theatre

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

Untitled-8On Sunday, the girls and I headed south to see a stage production of Disney’s Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty at a charming little theatre in Centerville called Town Hall Theatre. The surrounding area is adorable with brick buildings and incredible visual interest in the way of architecture & presentation (for me at least). There is a Panera Bread right next door, which is how I happened upon the quaint little area after a haircut one day. There wasn’t much room inside to take pictures- the theatre is old and teeny tiny, so when more than five people gather in it, you put your camera away and enjoy the experience, if you know what I mean. It’s okay, the clock right out front reminded me of a framed print I saw once that I would love to create a wall around- a wall of clocks seems so cool to me. And a shot of the front steps leading into the theatre did not disappoint either. Bricks + black/white = cool shot in my book.

May 22: Ballerina Picture Day

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

The ballerinas of the house had their recital pictures taken today even though we’re three weeks out from the actual recital date. Last year, it was a heavy mess to combine individual images, team images, rehearsal, and the actual recital on the same afternoon (you think!), so the owner/ dance instructor split  the dates this year. My older girls were over the moon excited for today because someone (me) promised to put on (a little bit of) make-up for pictures. The result? Two slightly, very happy, dolled up girlies. I can’t resist sharing more than one today- please bear with me.

Ashleigh laughing at me being goofy post-pictures:

_MG_9478That same cutie in color. I think that might be my eye color on her. Nice.

It’s amazing to me how a little color can change the mood of an image so much. Well, and maybe a smile. Here’s a sneak peek of Sarah’s costume, too- they are dancing to a Sound of Music song.
