Flashback Friday: Fall Homecoming 1994

Homecoming While at my parent’s house last week, I thumbed through a scrapbook and found pictures of Susie the Homecoming Princess… I had completely forgot that I was one, too! Of course I also forgot to steal one away for the blog, so this photo is courtesy my high school yearbook…

I was super surprised to be on court, it was a lovely week of fun including painted faces, stuffing marshmallows in our mouth during lunchtime festivities (who comes up with these embarrassing games?), and dressing up as a cowgirl, a cave woman and of course, wearing our pajamas… I didn’t win the title of queen at the end of the week, but honestly, it didn’t matter :)

Looking at this picture reminds me of how much I miss my hair. I think my dad would say the same about his.

What Can You Do with a Laundry Basket?

1. Obvious clothing holding purposes.

2. A good catch-all for picking up toys, displaced socks and shoes in the living room.

3. Easily adapts to become a tower for Ashleigh to stand on (against mom’s wishes, of course).

4. Real Simple says you can use it to haul in beach going accesories and flip it over to use as a picnic basket (you just go first, k?).

5. Catch big sisters and taunt them with laughter, even though said sister really enjoys being captured.

Ash_laundry_basketIt’s rare that I actually catch Ashleigh smiling at the camera, I couldn’t resist sharing this one!

Current Events

Who: The Ants

What: Will NOT be allowed to take over

Why: Because they are so gross and make me squirm, especially when found crawling alive on my TOOTHBRUSH!

When: Right now, this week, last week, this month- ugh.

Where: MY BATHROOM! #%*&(#%*

Plan of attack: I have sprayed RAID around the seams of the doorway and made Andy re-caulk the open areas where those little black ants might be able to squeeze their way in. I gave my bathroom a complete scrub down today (yes, honey, I cleaned) and I am ready with more RAID, Lysol and caulking to get rid of those guys. I’m this close (see, this close: —–) to dropping an ant bomb in there. Arg.

Avoiding Projects in Motion

Are you one of those that has set out to do projects around the home and in order to actually sit down and do it, you must first, get a glass of water, check your e-mail (all three or four accounts, that is), check in with you favorite blog writers and hobby sites (or guild forums as it may be with the guys) or throw in a load of laundry, clean the kitchen sink, make your bed… before you actually, you know, get on task?

So one of my biggest ways to procrastinate laundrydishesprojectslayoutsreplyingtoe-mails is blog hopping. All that means is that I click on some hot link that brings me to another site and then to another site and on and on and on (actually, we’ll just blame Monday night’s procrastinating on Jenny since she started it with the link to Wednesday Stampers). I happened upon one that just about made me fall off the sofa laughing: 52projects.com. Here’s the Not-To-Do List post that made me laugh out loud and disturb Andy from a peaceful flickr exploration…

if you aren’t laughing at this post, then just read some of the comments- they were crackin’ me up! I love the one from the gal that googles herself.

The Recipe That Has Us Using Our Crockpot

If you are one of those folks that loves to use their crockpot, but don’t have enough good recipes on hand, then  you must, must try this one. It has us using our crockpot on a fairly regular basis:

Barbecue Brisket Sandwiches

courtesy Better Homes and Gardens Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes

1 3-Pound beef brisket

½ cup water

3 tablespoons vinegar

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon ground cumin or chili powder

2 cups bottles barbecue sauce

8 Kaiser rolls or hamburger buns, split

Dill pickle slices (optional)

Red onion slices (optional)

Additional barbecue sauce (optional)

  1. Trim fat from brisket. Cut brisket, if necessary, to fit in a 3 ½ -to 4-quart slow cooker. Stir together water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and cumin or chili powder. Pour over meat. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 10-13 hours or on high heat setting for 5-6 hours.
  2. Remove the meat from the cooker. Discard cooking liquid. Using two forks to pull, shred meat and return to the cooker. Stir in barbecue sauce. Cover and cook on high-heat setting for 30 minutes or until heated through. Serve atop split Kaiser rolls or hamburger buns with pickles, onion and / or additional sauce, if desired. Pair with a side of baked beans and corn on the cob. Yummers. J

Two Conversations I Won’t Soon Forget

Do you ever have conversations that pass the time away right before one hits slumber land? Andy and I often lay awake at night pondering our days, weekends and whatnot. The other night, we somehow began talking about the  character’s names on some of our favorite TV shows– and we couldn’t remember even their first names! Take for example, the Chief of Staff from the show The West Wing. The president’s right hand man- had many episodes involve and revolve around him… we couldn’t remember his name. The main detectives on Law and Order- they appear in almost every scene- it was a stretch to get out one of the last names they reference periodically. But… somehow… we could name each character from our beloved FRIENDS (my beloved, not Andy’s) by first and last name, who they dated, almost married or did marry, zany acts from random episodes, idiosyncrasies- I tell you, we were laughing at how much we knew over that one sitcom despite investing a load of time into other time television dramas.

The next morning over our breakfast, his name just popped into my head: "LEO!" I shouted (the name of The West Wing’s Chief of Staff). Ah… I did pay attention!

The girls and I went to buy some material at Jo-Ann’s and Sarah spied a lady at the end of the aisle and announced, "Look, Mommy, she has a baby in her tummy, too."

Mortified by what my observant daughter had just said (the older lady was clearly not expecting), I suggested we might find what we needed over there and went and looked down another aisle. Yep, I was speechless.

spider blog II

Spiderforweb

Borneo?  The Zoo?  Nope, just our wild adventure backyard.  This must be the largest spider that I have ever seen in person.  Its web goes from the top of our house to the top of the neighbor’s.  Her fire red orange was particularly vivid in the late afternoon sun today.

Sarah also came in today to say that there was a spider in her sandbox.  I found a black widow belly up in the sand, but when I poked her she sprang to life.  So many different spiders here in sunny San Diego, and I have no idea why.

What is your best spider story?  Have you ever kept a pet spider?  I know at least one of you has!

update: our previous eight legged friend appears to have moved on.  We visited for a couple of weeks, but his funnel shaped web is getting dusty and he is no longer in sight.

15-minute Household Creativity Project

Challenged by our friend Suzanne to spend 15 minutes making something functional in our home pretty, I decided to work on the space out in our garage that has just needed, well, something. There is an area in our garage that I cleaned out that houses Sarah’s crafty items like paints, stamps and paper and a little picnic table, but it is still in need of some, well prettiness.

The wall above the storage area is a boring old pegboard (remember we’re in the garage here) and I decided to hang Sarah’s crafts that we have done over the past few weeks and some she has already done at preschool (Andy said that was a better option rather than babes and hot rods. I had to agree). I have only taped them up for now as I couldn’t find those clippy things at Target. So here we go:

Stay tuned for the area below that will take more than 15-minutes, but is in the works…

What’re You Up to Sarah?

I think she’s caught the bug. The scrapbooking bug, that is. I was cleaning up lunch and noticed that Sarah’s saggy piggies needed a picture taken and I asked what she was up to over there? And she said she was scrapbooking (and she was literally just moving papers around, kind of like me). So I asked her if she would like to scrapbook and of course she said, "Sure!"

She wanted to use purple and pink papers and flowers and I threw in the stamps for a title:
