Where in the U.S. are the Sincocks?: Day 5 & 6

Oh man. We have driven more miles than I care to count in the past few days. Yesterday, we hit the open road of Kansas to be greeted by a debatably nondescript Kansas sign:

20080730-IMG_1481

I’d like to advertise the great state of Kansas as beautiful and full of sunflowers (they are somewhere, I’m sure!), but we mostly enjoyed views of rows and rows of (or MILES and MILES) of cornfields:

20080730-IMG_1486

Missouri (pronounced Mizz-UR-Uh since I met a Missourian once that pronounced it that way- plus it’s just fun to roll off the tongue that way) (did you try to say it that way yet??) proved to be a little more eventful- first, you enter the state right at the intersection of a busy highway so the state sign had to be searched for- I barely caught it!:

20080731-IMG_1499

We caught a hitchhiking insect on our antenna from the muggy air that made for some good conversation:

20080731-IMG_1511

(nice bokeh from the sports cam, eh?)

We got to be Dudley Do-Rights and let a trucker know that he had a blown out tire in front of us on the highway. My adrenaline was racing as I sped up and honked and honked (did I ever mention how much I LOVE to honk the car horn? Especially in tunnels!) and Andy waved and motioned for him to go to the side of the road to let him know of his misfortune:

20080731-IMG_1509

Where in the U.S. am I– I keep looking in the handy dandy atlas:

20080731-IMG_1502

We made it to Illinois without too much more to report:

20080731-IMG_1522

And we lost another hour as we passed into the land of Colts fans:

20080731-IMG_1537

Tomorrow we arrive at our new home and we couldn’t be more eager to see our new town in person!

In order to keep the girls occupied (read: happy) on the cross-country journey to Ohio, we bought a couple of portable DVD players and headphones (very important!) and ALL of their DVD’s:

20080728-IMG_1391

I already mentioned the Leap Frog Leapster was a hit in a previous post, but so was the Princess Etch-a-Sketches that Aunt Nana gave them:

    20080730-IMG_1478

The white board and markers to draw and draw and write letters and draw (designated only for the Bean, I have to say):

20080730-IMG_1475

The Princess and Barbie magnetic dress-up dolls  are like mini-car games with not too much mess:

20080730-IMG_1494

There was the day we played with post-it notes and Scotch tape:

20080730-IMG_1472

20080728-IMG_1392

And don’t forget book upon books (and snacks and snacks!!):

20080731-IMG_1513

But my all-time favorite way to help the girls stay happy on this trip was to throw a party by handing out noise makers:

20080731-IMG_1531

Honestly, the time in the car wasn’t full of screaming and crying as it could have been- don’t get me wrong, there have been moments when Andy and I questioned our sanity, but our journey was definitely doable. I hope I can encourage other families out there to hit the open road!

Where in the U.S. are the Sincocks?: Day 3 & 4

Your dinners all sounded wonderful and made me want a home-cooked meal so badly– soon enough, I know! When you last read this series, we had just touched over the Utah border. While there, my Andy thought we should take advantage of the leisurely road trip time and take in some National Parks, so we bought a pass. Arches National Park and Rocky Mountain National Parkweren’t too far off the beaten path and it was such a bonus to take in some of the views of our country we may not have seen had we stuck to the GPS’s route.

I love signs, don’t you? I SO should have made the girls stand in front of it to be kitsch- what was I thinking?

20080728-IMG_1404

I caught this one of Andy and Lo in the area known as the Windows trail (the arches were formed and appear as windows viewing far-off desert places) and it reminds me that Sarah was this cute in the hiking backpack at some point in our life, too:

20080728-IMG_1411

Oh! I just noticed Ash and Sarah climbing the trail back there- do you see them? Two pieces of advice on going east from Arches- take the 128 highway in Utah that cuts back to the main freeway- it takes a little longer, but the Colorado River cuts back there and forms AMAZING red bluffs and you drive right along it. Also, the well known arch is Delicate Arch- and it’s so far from the parking area that one cannot hike in 100 + desert heat with a kid in a stroller or a 3-year-old that is too tired and sweaty (her words, not mine). So, just plan your visit during a morning in April, maybe.

Andy was handling the sports cam when we (finally!) made it to the Colorado border, so you get a shot that is looking slightly out of focus, but in its entirety:

20080728-IMG_1426

The Rocky Mountains do not disappoint. We spent the majority of today driving through windy switchbacks enjoying the coniferous and deciduous forest (just say thank you to Andy for those fun words!) that make up Rocky Mountain National Park. The token guy in our truck was pretty excited to be there, did I mention that?

20080729-IMG_1443

20080729-IMG_1444

We are eating lunch the frugal way with the makings of sandwiches and such in our cooler. This scene is so much better than a fast food restaurant, don’t you think??

20080729-IMG_1431

A little family picture opp with the gorillapod (Andy and his gadgets, let me tell you!):

20080729-IMG_1440

This is what the girls thought about the National Park excursion as we were close to exiting:

20080729-IMG_1453

I have to agree with the Mulkey’sas they are on their own trek, it is far and few between when the girls are all conked out at once, but it is a close to a heavenly bliss of calm in the car when they are.

Don’t worry, we made time to hang out in the fresh air to direct their energy better- Denver has a fine city park near their zoo and we really had a great time tonight after a long day of driving:

20080729-IMG_1468

Stay tuned for the next part of this cross country series- how to keep everyone under five happy in the car!

Where in the U.S. are the Sincocks?: Day 1 and 2

After some tearful good-byes with Peeps and Grammy on Saturday morning, we headed out for a new adventure:

20080726-IMG_1355

20080726-IMG_1356

Our trip was deterred only by a stop at Target in Victorville (Ashleigh’s headphones were too big and we needed an Atlas),  a Lolo poop blowout somewhere off the 15 FWY past Baker (GROSS!) and our first lunch stop for the girls. Andy and I were holding out for the last chance to eat at In-N-Out for a year in Vegas, Baby Vegas:

20080726-IMG_1360

Until we got to Utah and realized the company had expanded to another state. Good for Utah, eh?

Speaking of getting to Utah, we got to pass a few familiar signs on the way– I completely forgot about the delay in the shutter on the sports cam- three times, I tell you- so here’s my bad shots of state signs while driving:

Welcome to Nevada:

20080726-IMG_1359

Welcome to Arizona:

20080726-IMG_1365

Welcome to Utah:

20080726-IMG_1369

Seriously, I miss my non-delay shutter, folks.

Inside the car, we’re fairing pretty well– as good as expected with three kids… the Leapster has been a hit with both Sarah and Ash:

20080726-IMG_1361

Lolo is absolutely 100 % over the driving and being strapped in part and wore herself out telling us so:

20080726-IMG_1371

Between asking how much longer we have to where we are going and needing to use the restroom, Sarah is mostly the happy traveler:

20080726-IMG_1370

So is Mama:

20080726-IMG_1363

Today, we hit the road again for the sightseeing part of the trip and visited Zion National Park- what’s a little trailblazing without an adventure hat, I say??

20080727-IMG_1375

Zion is beautiful- walls of sedimentary rock have built up over thousands of years to create a majestic scene- this was one sight we caught- but as with most landscape pictures I take, this shot just doesn’t do it justice.

20080727-IMG_1376

I received a Verse of the Day calendar from my dear friend Sarah for my birthday and twice now, I have had very meaningful scriptures placed on dates that can only be a smile and a wink from the Lord. Today’s scripture came from Hebrews and read:

“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.” Hebrews 12:22-23

Andy and I thought that was pretty cool. On the way back to the hotel, Andy saw this amazing splash of sunshine ricocheting off a cloud and I am so glad we pulled over to capture it because at the next exit, the sun moved past the cloud– how’s this for breathtaking (only slightly moved over the blues in PP):

20080727-IMG_1387

If you’re still here reading, I totally want to know what you had for dinner! Thanks for visiting us on or trip :)

Five on Friday

5. If you didn’t know, my parents and my mother-in-law live in an area of Southern California that can get pretty hot during the summer. In order to help keep us cooled down, I took my girlfriend Michelle’s advice and tried the icebag under the armpits method.

DSC_0042

4. Reluctantly, my mom joined in. She agreed that it does work to help cool the body down!

DSC_0046

3. Becca is the coolest aunt  (next to my Aunt Nana of course) and got her old Barbie’s down (that were formerly my Barbie’s that were formerly owned by Grammy) for the girls to take with us to Ohio. That’s a lot of Barbies.

DSC_0050

2. We’ve had a full week here bowling, going to the aquarium, swimming and visiting with old friends - I’ll try to catch up with some over the weekend! DSC_0034

1. One more day in California and we’re trekking across America. Stay tuned for a series titled “Where in the U.S. are the Sincocks.” You’re on the edge of your seat, right?

The Living Out of Suitcases Post

We have spent the last week living out of suitcases and we still have two more weeks to go until we reach our new home. Last week, we spent some time at the hotel at a local Marine Base (note my best sleeper back there on the right!):

20080720-IMG_1153

We stuck around for a few extra days even though our house was empty so we could buy some time to do a thorough job cleaning and spend one last weekend down in sunny San Diego. Our friends came together for a fun night of fellowship and farewells on Saturday- of course the traveling computer doesn’t have a portal for my camera’s CF- so the sports car cam will be my default for a few weeks (I really don’t know how to use Andy’s camera is what I’m saying):

Andy and a few of the guys from our Casa V Home Fellowship hanging out having a good time:

20080719-IMG_1150

(I think that’s Jarrod there doing the Robot making everyone laugh)

Our last Sunday morning at Maranatha Chapel proved to be somewhat emotional for me- I tell you, I  have become quite fond of the teaching, the worship and the ministries at this church. And, let’s not forget to mention the people.Sigh. It’s hard to know that you’re leaving such a good thing, that the Lord is working mightily within the walls and challenging believers to walk the talk each day as they exit the grounds. Our church family has been a large part of our lives there in San Diego, too. But, I am confident that the Lord will use us, to help build up and encourage others as we go to a new town.

I didn’t break out the camera very much actually this past week. I just wanted to take in the atmostsphere and enjoy our friends. I did get one shot with my bud Peris- I think this is after the flood gates opened up with the realization we wouldn’t be on this campus for a long while…

20080720-IMG_1161

We had one last thing to take care of in San Diego before we headed out of town – to pick up our dry cleaning. Do you remember that we are procrastinators on just about everything in our life? Right. SO it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that this waiting game we play bit us in the butt and this is what welcomed us at the cleaners on Sunday afternoon:

20080720-IMG_1164

Luckily, we have good friends willing to help us out! Phew!

FInally, we’re spending this week relaxing with our family before we actually take on the cross country leg of this transition at the end of the week. Here’s Sarah and Ashleigh enjoying some ice cream on the back porch on Grandma Sincock’s swing- they sure do know how to bring upon a smile :)
20080720-IMG_1172

[5] on Friday

[5] It’s been so long since I logged on to Typepad, I almost forgot my super secret password.

[4] After a really high recommendation by my girlfriend, Peris, we ate at The Fish Market tonight. I can’t believe we waited almost three years to eat there- it was wonderful! Bonus- they know kids– pizza is on the menu.

[3] Hands down, Chocolate Mousse Royale from Baskin Robbins is my ultimate favorite ice cream. I mean, in case you were wondering. If I weren’t so lazy I would sign up everyone in my family for the birthday club and take them in for free ice cream on their special day… okay, okay, maybe I can spare the time.

[2] Andy and I are officially hooked on The Office. He received the first 3 seasons for Father’s Day and we’re almost done watching all the CDs! I am afraid to read the blogs for fear it will give away the episodes we have yet to see.

[1] We said good-bye to our San Diego home today- I quickly snapped one shot of the welcoming sign at the end of our street with my camera phone for the scrapbook page I’ll make in about five years.

New adventures are fast approaching!

Disarray

Our home is currently in disarray.

We have cleaned out everyone’s closets, hall cupboards and the black hole we sometimes refer to as the garage.

Our trash can is overflowing with unloved toys and what-nots (and trash day was just Friday- it’s going to be a long week there!).

The floors are covered with icky grime and the walls still need to be erased by the magic eraser.

Magazine files have been decreased. Children’s books have been organized. Our main PC is packed up (thank you God for laptops that travel easily!) . All these boxes are everywhere.

So Andy had a solution to curb the wall of anxiety: he is out getting donuts.

All is well when sugar is the answer :)

blog hijack II–delayed response

This is Andy again with another blog hijack. (I actually wrote this in Switzerland!)

< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

So late nights in < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />

Paris

meant that we didn’t get a chance to update the blog, but we are in

Switzerland

now and waiting for the laundry to open (in an hour) so I have a few minutes.  We are so thankful to be away from the madness of

Paris

and

London

(especially

London

) and are really looking forward to hiking and enjoying God’s majesty.

Susie doesn’t want so many pictures of herself, but after she posted the Guitar Hero pic I am pretty sure that I have free reign.

Here we go!

IMG_0955

We went on a pretty cool bike tour in

Paris

our first night.  If nothing else it was a nice excuse to get off our feet for a night.  Seriously, my feet are killing me by the end of each day.  It is like a full day at

Disneyland

—10 days in a row.

IMG_0962

The food in

Paris

was so much better than

London

.  This is an authentic French café.  You know it is authentic because there was a businessman smoking at a table like a foot away from ours.  Susie also bravely tried escargot (twice!), and it didn’t even cost me a pair of shoes.

IMG_0966

But Susie did buy shoes here.  You can see the four floors of the department store behind us.  Amazing.  What was even more amazing was that she had to wear the shoes a few hours later when I stepped on her sandal and it broke.  /cry for Susie’s favorite pair of gold sandals.

IMG_0969

The most beautiful woman in the world and the most gawked at woman in the world.

This picture pretty much sums up the Louvre.  Notice the shopping bag (containing aforementioned shoes.)

IMG_0995

Parisian apartments must be so small that they are all forced to hang out in parks and drink wine.  This is the only picture of Susie at work in this post.

IMG_1012

Here is the same park from the top of the tower.  You can barely see the people still out there…at 11pm.

IMG_1027

The tower right before we raced to the Metro to avoid the 12:30 am cutoff (we made it to our hotel at 12:38.  Susie actually walked the length of that park in her new shoes and even walked down the stairs from about halfway when the elevator line was too long.  Women sure do pick silly shoes to wear.

We went from a fancy Mariott in

Paris

to a hostel here in

Switzerland

, so we have some adjustment to do here.  The good thing is that we have an internet connection and not a lot to do at night so we may be connected a bit more.

Auf Wiedersehen!

Mind the Gap

London has an underground subway line- known as “The Tube” and it’s the quickest way to get from Point A to Point B, especially helpful if you are on one side of the city and you need to get to the other. As you exit, a gentleman in a proper British accent carefully suggests to mind the gap as not to fall between the concrete and the transporting cars. Over and over again, Mind the Gap. It was ingrained into our heads as we tried to imitate his accent. We never came close- but it was fun to try!

A few shots of the more well known parts of London- these are what we call postcard shots… you can find a collection of our London photos in a set on my flickr page.

Big Ben attached to the hip of Parliament:

What should I do with all these photos? Seriously, perhaps I can make coffee mugs for Christmas presents? hee-hee.

I’m No Globetrotter

Aside from my early adult ambitions of becoming a jet setter at any age, after traveling halfway around the Northern Hemisphere, I quickly learned, I was never going to become the chic that takes on city after city, luggage and passport in tow, hitting new desitinations every few days for weeks on end… No, my friends, our “trip of a lifetime” was just that- we enjoyed ourselves immensely, experienced the British, French and Swiss cultures for a few days each, and learned that I was more than ready to come back home to the girls and my American coffee house when Day 12 hit.

I have a few topical posts that I will hold out on, but for now, just a few favorites from the last leg of our trip- Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland was just as beautiful as Andy had described it to me. He visited some years ago the summer after he graduated college- the views from the valley were simply breathtaking. I cannot accurately describe the sight from our hotel room, even, since the majesty and depth of the Swiss Alps  cannot be captured on my camera. I will forever, then, attach them to my memory and know without a doubt that God has created some amazingly beautiful landscapes around the world and I was lucky enough to experience bits and pieces of them.

Our view from the hotel room in Lauterbrunnen:

20080702

We found a cute little park to hang out in Murren- the town just north of us - did I mention we were missing the girls??

20080703

The walk back to the town we were staying in was ripe with picturesque views- I couldn’t just pose in the pretty fields, you know…

20080703-2

And now we are home- for twelve short days until the movers come. Sigh. It’s always something keeping us on our toes!

A million thank you’s to my mother-in-law, my mom and my sweet aunt for sacrificing their time (and hot coffee!) to watch the girls while we enjoyed this trip over to Europe. We are blessed and grateful for you and hope we can in some small way return the favor.

Over and out.
