Poem In Your Pocket Day

In honor of National Poetry Month, April 30th was designated as Poem in Your Pocket Day. I first learned about it last year from my friend Jill- thanks, J!

I chose The Daffodils here to share because the real deal certainly presented a lovely surprise in our garden this spring. After a few months of dormancy and brown hanging out around our neighborhood, the yellow flowers were embraced and cheered on, although, I do believe they were the ones that brought the cheer to us first. I noted their intense addition to the landscape after driving through an older area of Dayton a few weeks ago where a plethora of long stemmed yellow buds filled the front yard and made me do a double take (if only I had a camera on me!). I am smitten, as is my dear friend, Anel :)

Without further ado:

The Daffodils
by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A Poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Ten on Tuesday.

1. Hello. Is it really almost May Day?

2. That can only mean we're 6 weeks away from seeing family- woo hoo (but who's counting?)!

3. I am really looking forward to a new camera soon- I'm trying not to get ahead of myself. Realistically, this camera takes some time to save for…

4. So I've been thinking about all the ways to fund it (the new camera, that is). Lauren can probably do without a sleigh crib, so there's craigslist… and I'm thinking about selling my newest UGG boots on eBay. After all, the warmer weather is here, what do I need them for now??

5. Speaking of shoes (how many times have I said that here, hmm?), these summery ones came home last week, but I should have listened to the reviews.. they were too big.
3279-844327-p
No worries, they're exchangeable (by the way, I'm fully aware that these do not fall under the "sassy" category- sometimes, park shoes trump sassy).

6. Oh! New banner alert for my subscribers. Come stop by and then grab some bubbles and go play!

7. Confession: I am the worst laundry service girl. Ever.

8. It's birthday party season- enjoy Ashleigh's 4th birthday party pictures here. We're two days out from counting down to Sarah's now. Sigh.

9. My printer hates my Avery label sticker sheet. I spent an hour trying to get them lined up today. What. A. MAJOR. Waste. Of. Time.

10. I'm really excited about the new photo wall collage that I convinced Andy we needed. The original idea was swiped from (the only) Starbucks in town- this is the phone image I captured awhile ago:

And how we interpreted it here at home:

(I added Ash in so you could see how large it is- I love it!!)

Happy Tuesday, Blog-Goers!

The Blanky.

Look at this- the 2-year-old version of Ashleigh loving on her blanky, tickling the ends with her fingers, rubbing it on her face.

_MG_6766-4-Edit
She loves this thing. It was given to her after she was born we stuck it up in a closet until she outgrew the baby blanket variety and she has been inspearable with it since.

And we loathe this thing. It's oversized. It's ratty. It is ALWAYS in the living room, on the floor, hanging out near Ash. We swore up and down it would not make the cross country trip to Ohio with us.

Of course it did. All empty promises.

Until yesterday when we decided it was time to graduate Ashleigh to a larger blanket. Last week we took a trip to the fabric store and she picked out new blanket material. Yesterday, we broke out the new fleece and scissors and got to work on a new and updated blanket.

This was the result:

Then the big moment came when I told her it was time to take blanky out of her room and replace it with the new one:

She just about broke my heart. What was I doing to her??

I told her we could fold it up and put it away and once she tried out the new blanket, she could make a decision if she wanted the old one or the new one. That seemed to cheer her up. Here she is before naptime:

Looks like she still fell asleep okay:

Four.

A month of counting down, a weekend of celebrating, a day of smiles. I'd say four is a big deal.

Especially to this little girl.

The cheese smile came out when we went outside (briefly!) to try out her new wheels. Watch out neighborhood, girl's got speed!!

Happy 4th Birthday to our Ashleigh Rae!

Friday Five

Some of my friends are familiar with this one- come on out and play.

My last five google searches are…
1. calendar (I seriously need to get a wall calendar!)

2. Meadowbrook Park, Columbia, MD (with the largest playground I've ever seen) (it's actually in Ellicott City, MD)

3. Urban Active (my new gym) (looking for childcare hours)

4. Cake Journal

5. Butterfly cupcakes (someone's birthday is just three days away!)

Speaking of, here she is with some "attitude" in her new butterfly dress (thanks Anna!!):

It's a no-brainer, just share your last five google searches- kind of a quick way to know what your peeps are up to!!

Beware of Roadkill

Ohio should come with a warning sign: Beware of Roadkill

I just can't get over how much roadkill there is here.
Seriously, everysingleroad I take. In the intersections. Off the shoulder. In the lanes. On the highway. EVERY which way I go.

It seems like an overabundance of dead mammals wind up not making it across Ohio pavement.
And not just cats like we see in California. No, most roadkill around here are much larger than your common pet.

Encounters in the middle of the road are often left there for days, I've noticed. Weeks maybe. I'm not sure, I'm not really keeping a record.

Mostly because there are too many dead animals to keep track of around these parts.

I fear the impact it's taken on my poor tires.

Abdominal cavity strewn across highways sneaks into the crevices of my black rubber wheels as I inadvertently drive through the decomposing fur and guts.

Such a lovely though isn't it?

Too bad I didn't take a picture for ya.

You're going to have to take my word for it and use your imagination.

Just beware of Ohio roadkill.

(wait come back, I won't talk about roadkill tomorrow)

Ten on Tuesday: Post- Easter Weekend Edition

1. Happy Belated Easter, everyone. Did you give something up for lent? My mom gave up fries- or so she says…

2. Then shetried to convince me to give up SOMEthing with her, but Andy didn't support me playing along to give up Starbucks just for the fun of it. I would have whined a lot, I know.

3. The morning was spent at church where our worship service rocked!

4. Then we headed out to Youngs Dairy for the Annual Egg Hunt (which is really an egg run). We were five minutes too late for the younger kids run, so we put Ash into Sarah's age category. Bad idea.

5. She got knocked down by an older kid pretending to be in the 5-7 category. Luckily a nice man that is part of the Young Family came and rescued Ash and filled her basket with eggs from a cart on the side. How cool is that? (pictures on Andy's camera, sorry)

6. Oh! My book club peeps (why do I love using that word??) convinced me I needed to dye eggs with the girls this year. We did a dozen, the girls LOVED it and as previously noted to my friends, I am the only one eating the hard boiled eggs. A couple are okay, but twelve? Blech. Over it.

7.  Lolo is in her two-year-old prime. I am thinking about making a compilation of her best inquisitions in a scrapbook.  On Sunday afternoon, Lauren took out her frenulum of lip my falling on the kitchen tile. She just landed on her nose/face and tore that sliver of skin off. Shiiiiver.
_MG_2207-Edit
8. On the way home from the ER, I mistakenly gave her a pen to write on a notepad to keep her occupied– only to find this when we arrived inside:
_MG_2206-Edit
Such an artist I have on my hands, eh? Luckily she's almost outgrown this pair.

9. Andy's been crazy sick lately and can't sleep. So he has been resorting to his new hobby: Drooling over a new car online in the middle of the night. You should vote: Acura TL or the Hyundai Genesis. Our timeline for buying a new car is late summer. (If you're my friend, you get brownie points if you vote for the former)

10. A few shots of Easter-wear- Lauren sporting her darling, tulle netting dress ( a little much, but I personally LOVE the look on a 2 year old):
_MG_2182-Edit

Ash wore this lovely lavender dress from Bubby- as it turns out, she had a couple of dresses to choose from. She's showing you just had windy and cold it was on Easter Sunday here in Dayton:
_MG_2193

I'm not sure who dressed Sarah, because it certainly wasn't me, but this is what she sported this past Sunday- a new bluish sundress from Grammy) with PINK! leggings underneath.
It's so bad, you only get to see a small sized photo!

Poor thing. There's always next year, right?

On Why I Don’t Need to Write a Letter to the Editor

We have been faithful Family Fun subscribers for just over two years now. I love this magazine for their great craft ideas, hands-on activities to do with the kids, organizing tips, and well, they have craft ideas! When this month's issue arrived, I dog-earred more than my fair share of pages to try out with the girls. Of course, Easter always sneaks up on me so we had to lickety split get some of the crafts done for the big day.

Now, this is where I thought I might send a little note to the editors of FF and say, Dude, put an age recommendation on these crafts! We I chose to do the handprint lilies and the paper-mâché egg diorama with Sarah and Ash during Lauren's (sometimes) nap time this week. And came across a few hiccups with this being a children's craft probably due to my kids being too young for the steps.

First, cutting tiny hands out for the lilies requires some small motor control that Ashleigh hasn't quite achieved yet. For that matter, neither does Sarah. So I wound up tracing & cutting 6 handprints out. Points for the kids: They were able to cut leaves and happily painted straws green for stems.

_MG_1523

Gosh they love paint.
Never mind that we didn't have yellow pipe cleaners, just pretend they look like lilies, okay?
_MG_1526

As for the dioramas, this turned out to be a little bit more tricky. There were four layers of tissue layer that needed to be applied to the balloon and Ashleigh didn't have enough patience to do all four with me. So, guess what happened? I took over the pasting duties and she applied tissue papers- for about    1 1/2 layers. And then her attention span was shot. So yours truly happily polished off the crafts (you know, this was a big project for a 5 1/2 year old, too).

We were pretty far into this project when everyone putzed out on me, but I'm so glad we I pressed on. Aren't these adorable?
_MG_1668
Sarah and Ashleigh were very fond of the little scrunched up tissue papers around the rim of the egg opening (I forgot to mention making a pattern, oh well). Additionally, I personally love the puff balls they chose for the chicks in the eggs.
Sarah's chick:
_MG_1673
Unfortunately, I only have one size of googly eyes on hand, so Ashleigh's abnormally smalled-headed chick had to make do with large googly eyes:
_MG_1670
ha- that one cracks me up (no pun intended).

I proudly displayed the crafts around the house when we were finished:

Lesson learned: Family Fun crafts don't come with age recommendations because they are not intended to be set out for little ones to do by themselves…. they are meant to be done with the family unit.
Lesson learned. It only took two years.

Interview Q’s with Ashleigh & Sarah

There is a list of questions going around facebook and some friend's blogs right now, and curiosity got the best of me today. Ashleigh was up first and then Sarah came along and answered the same questions- bear with me, I'll share ten favorites because these girls make me smile:

 What makes mom
happy?

Ash: Throwing away garbage in the cans.

Sarah: When I obey you.

How does your
mom make you laugh?

A: Tickling me.

S: When you say oink. (I alway oink from behind the camera to stir up some smiles)

How old is your
mom?

A: 18 (I did not pay her to say that, promise!)

S: 31

What does your mom do when you're not around?

A: Ride bicycles

S: Scrapbook

If your mom becomes famous, what will it be for?

S: Being an opera singer. (enter lots of giggling here)

What is your mom not very good at?

A: Getting egg yellow things out when you make cookies (separating yolk from egg white- she's so observant!)

S: I'm going to guess (wait for it)–not shopping at Target

What does mom do for a job?

A: Making cards

S: She takes care of me, Ashleigh and Lauren

What do you and you mom do together?

A: Have movie nights together.

S: We play frisbee together

How are you and your mom the same?

A: Our eyes are the same (true!)

S: Because we both have the same skin color (true!)

What does your mom like most about your dad?

A: Hugging him.

S: He does funny jokes on you (more giggling!)

These were so much fun, I'm glad I did this. I might even scrapbook the rest of them – just to keep on hand!

This is when the tables got turned and Sarah started asking me all kinds of random questions- she's such a little news reporter sometimes, I love it!

And Ashleigh just 12 days left of being three:
