Vacation Bible School

It's been a busy fun-filled week with Operation Space at Vacation Bible School. Both Sarah and Ashleigh have been participating with our church's annual summer program and having a blast! I've been busy there, too, and it's hard not to hum along to the catchy tunes with the kids.

Here's a few shots of the action this week:

This is one of the center pieces for the snack table- I was super impressed:

And Lauren has been having a blast with other workers' kids in the toddler room. See picture for proof:

The worship has been accompanied by some lovely aliens:

Some incentive to learn scripture each day- "Star Bucks!" I'm pretty sure Sarah was disappointed because she thought she was getting the real deal but has to settle for the kids' store on Friday:

5…4…3…2…1… Blast OFF!

A parting shot  of Lauren digging into God's word (I know you love that she's looking at it upside down!):

“Mommy, now Mimmie Mouse can see next to me at the table.”

_MG_6850-Edit

After remembering there is a no-toy-at-the-table-rule, Lauren scouted out the Elmo chair and plopped her faithful Minnie in it right next to her during breakfast and announced that her Mimmie Mouse could now sit next to her at the table.

It's moments like this that make my heart swell all over.

Visiting the Dayton Air Show: Lines and People

Andy was pretty excited last week to have free passes to the Dayton Air Show- and bonus, VIP parking. How on earth, right? Some people have all the luck! I couldn't get that tall guy to duck in front of me, so some of the sign is blocked. Oh well. Note the lack of line here- people in England would not be happy with this set up.

When we finally made it through the very heavy traffic to park and get in (and the lines for the biffy and the lines for lunch), we quickly grabbed an open spot to see the Tora! Tora! Tora! planes reenacting something straight out of World War II. While impressive, I couldn't help but feel a tug of sadness that they really did fight a war like this back in the day.

I was most impressed by Sean Tucker's acrobatic performance- he has such amazing flight skills. Of course, I was too impressed to capture him doing some of my favorite stunts such as falling from the sky doing spirals and even hovering, but here he is doing a little fly by action:

_MG_6725
The girls were somewhat interested in the planes- but not nearly so as their daddy.
_MG_6715
In fact, while I took two of them to the restroom (and was gone 45 minutes), he managed to capture about 75 images of this plane here- the C-17:
_MG_6752
Our friend Mike flies this plane, so I think he's going to make  a mini-album for him or something.

If you haven't noticed, the ominous clouds did open up and rain a bit and the girls were just about ready to go, so we started to head out.  By the time we made our way over toward the gate, they spotted the jumpy things. How could we say no- the rain had stopped and the girls had been so patient all day. Some of my favorite smiles of the day were from here. Here's Sarah doing a flippity flip:

And Ashleigh getting into the jumping action, too:

Proof that Lauren and I were there:

As we were walking out, the famous Air Force Thunderbirds appeared for their portion of the show. We were able to see some of their awesome performance from the parking lot, so not all was lost. If you ever get a chance to visit an air show, just be prepared for two things in order to actually see the planes: Lines and lots of people!

Mini-Tutorial: Make Your Own Birthday Countdown Calendar on a Cookie Sheet

A few months ago, I posted a picture of an altered cookie sheet turned birthday countdown calendar and I have received enough responses about it that I thought it might be helpful to post a how to of sorts. My friend Janelle actually prompted this craft-making session since her little guy Lucas has an upcoming birthday and she wanted to make one for him. She brought over the necessary items and we got to work yesterday.

Items needed:
cookie sheet
patterned paper
1 1/2" square punch
number & letter stickers/rub-ons
mod podge
foam brush
small magnets with self-adhesion
wooden doodad

Instructions:
1. Collect materials needed for project.
 _MG_6652
2. Choose pattern papers that coordinate (or not, your choice) and punch 30 squares.
_MG_6653
3. Line them up on the cookie sheet and arrange to desired visual effect. I'm pretty boring and did six rows of five squares.
_MG_6656
4. You can do one of two things to add the numbers on- collect the squares from the top left and go right down and make a stack or leave them where they are at laid out on the cookie sheet and add on numbers so you can see them all at once. Remember to begin at "30" from the top left to make it a countdown to the child's birth date appearing at the bottom right.
_MG_6659
5 & 6. Using the foam brush and Mod Podge (an adhesive typically used for decoupage), apply a light coating on the backside of each square and carefully place on the cookie sheet. Apply enough pressure to all corners so the square stays in place.

7. While the squares are drying, make good use of your time by applying the magnets to the back of the pre-made wood doodad. This will be used as a place holder to count down days until your child's birthday. You can purchase pre-painted wood cut outs at Michael's or similar or paint your own.

(this little airplane totally makes me ache for a little boy in our house!)
8. This is also a good time to make your child's name on some cardstock using letter stickers. Since I only made one countdown calendar, I put my children's names on individually with magnets and just switch them out depending on whose birthday we are celebrating. And bonus, they are magnetic so I stick them on the back of the cookie sheet when they aren't in use so we don't lose them when being stored…
_MG_6670
9. An almost finished cookie sheet- now you just need to add a little title with stickers or rub-ons to polish it off and either go over the paper squares with a light coat of Mod Podge or use a clear satin spray to set it all for good.

Janelle sent me a photo of her finished project, I love that she added her personal touch here and there for Lucas and Axel.

Speaking of, here's Janelle with her littlest guy- isn't he a sweetheart?

A parting shot of my original countdown calendar- see now you have one more girls and one for boys to decide how you might like to make your own!

Ten on Tuesday.

1. The nice lady at childcare today counted my change back to me. It made me think of my days as a cashier at Home Depot when I learned how to do that in Cashier College. Yes there is such a thing. And yes, I am currently in love with the lady at childcare that counts $$ back.

2. If you don't know how, I will teach you, it's awesome.

3. Andy and I sat down and watched Gran Torino tonight- we still like Clint Eastwood even if his co-actors acting was atrocious in this movie, as well as the choice of language. Ooh, ouch.

4. Ashleigh and I are currently taking a swim class twice a week together. She absolutely LOVES being in the water. My girl is a fish.

5. I have T-10 weeks until the USAF 1/2 marathon. Any locals want to join the fun? Sign up here.
6. Our church's new kids building was broken into not once, but TWICE last week. It breaks my heart to see such a beautiful building with wood filling holes where glass once was.

7. I am in desperate need of new glasses. My current ones have the anti-glare coating chipping off. It's so distracting looking out into the world.

8. Speaking of, I woke up the other morning and saw the end of a rainbow. It was so cool that I thought I better grab my camera. When I came back, I noticed the entire bow was smiling down on me. I obviously bumped some blues so you could see the rainbow stand out some here:

_MG_6559-Edit

9. I'm currently eating healthier snacks- pita chips with hummus is topping my list as a favorite. My kids don't like either, so it works for non-sharers like me. :)  Unfortunately, I haven't kicked the dessert habit yet.

10. I meant to post this awhile ago, but you know how it goes. Sarah joined the barbaric customs of the world and got her ears pierced on her 6th birthday. This past Saturday marked 6 weeks when she could change out her original studs and we've changed them faithfully every day since. Today, after coordinated her outfit to match her hoops, she asked if I could take a picture of her since she matched. Happy to oblige dear.
_MG_6627
Funny thing about this outfit- the skirt is actually a sundress but one strap went missing and we haven't located it yet. So, it's  a skirt now- she certainly is creative!

Backyard Fun!

The girls just love hanging in the combined backyards of our neighbors and playing with their friends. In fact, the question "When we get home, can we go play with so and so?" comes up anytime everytime we are headed home from somewhere else.

Luckily, the kids get along really well and have mutual interests. Yesterday, it started off quite calmly when the girls were playing in the water table with Little Sarah (she's the one there below in the cute pink suit). Then it escalated when suits got on and it became a race to see who get one another drenched quickest. Amy's kids have these really cool soaker shooters (probably not the official name) and all kids present joined in by turning the water table into a loading zone.

She's not so fond of the water initially but she's been warming up to the idea of it.

I'm loving summertime in Ohio :)

Don’t Tell Grammy…

but there may just be such a thing as Minnie Mouse overkill.

SOMEone's a fan!

On the realization that I’m the nerdy mom that dresses her kids alike.

Shoot. But they are so cute, right? Or are you gagging?

_MG_6514
I waited until Thursday to go get the girls some patriotic flair, but the stores had slashed prices on the cuter outfits, and I had a coupon. So what's a mom to do? Sarah completely surprised me by being excited for the red, white and blue garb, too!

We enjoyed a a couple of barbecues with neighbors and friends yesterday. The highlight for the girls
was definitely running around in the yard with sparklers in the dark. Andy even handed the two-year-old one- he must be crazy! I didn't bring my camera because I was sure we were going to be rained out, but as it turned out, it just drizzled all night long, and the local fireworks display was a pretty awesome.

Here's the dessert we contributed last night- a Fourth of July Trifle- Super easy to make, even Lolo got to help make this one (when she wasn't holding twelve things in her hands):

Hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day!

Random

  • I really don't like the edges of pop-tarts, they are just not that tasty. Why don't they put the frosting all the way to the corners? I bet more people would eat the corners then, myself included.
  • Our F-150 just got a new set of brakes this week, just to get snippy with us and stop working at a local parking lot the VERY next day. Looks like it needs a new starter.
  • My knee has been doing some weird things for me- like painful things. One week I turn 32, the next week, I'm all achy, hobbling and need to ice the joints. What gives?
  • Our neighborhood is crazy- they totally set of illegal firework displays  (illegal in CA- questionable legality here)… but I shouldn't say it too loud since we were recipients of free entertainment with the kids last night. I caught this before I stepped in to drop the camera off:

_MG_6380

  • OOh the bullet points don't like letting me have room in between thoughts. Sheesh, cranky.
  • Sarah enjoyed her Day Camp this week and has six weeks of swim lessons to look forward to this summer. Busy!
  • Our California Adventures pictures can be views in the album to the right——>.
  • Got to enjoy authentic s'mores last night with our neighbor friends. I tried to make cookie s'mores the other night- you should just know, it isn't the same. Not even close.

Happy Fourth of July weekend- be safe out there. Especially if you live in crazy free zones like Montana or Ohio ;)
