12 Memories

One of my favorite blogs that I happened upon in 2009 is Stacy Julian’s little secret blog titled, “Sprinkles.” If you haven’t visited, take a few minutes and shuffle off over there, get an eye full of bright colors, a happy environment and plenty of inspiration to sprinkle your life (and others) with a little “specialness.” I haven’t told the girls why we are doing anything from her list, but their December has been a little bit more magical by the little 2 cents I’ve read from Stacy’s sprinkles site. {End plug.}

So, today, I present, 12 memories (in 12 minutes) that I created very quickly with 12 images to represent our memories of 2009 by Stacy’s suggestion! They are not necessarily my favorite shots of the year, but I love that I can instantly look at the picture and know without a doubt what month it was taken and that our 2009 was full, rich in activity, covered in protection, blessed with travel and togetherness.

Here’s to 2009 and new adventures in 20-10!

More Adventures in NYC

Before we left for New York, Andy and  I both made lists of places we would like to visit with the girls in New York. Some of them made the cut, others of them got drafted to the next time we visit category (and we both hope it won’t be another 9 years before we visit again!). For me, visiting the spot where the Twin Towers once stood was a non-negotiable. I had visited this place in 2000, just one year before the tragic events of 9/11/01. I remember very clearly walking around the mall at the bottom of the World Trade Center debating whether to buy a purple pea coat from GAP that I would never wear for $89 or not. For those that care, I passed. And as silly as it sounds, that is my only recollection of the building pre-9/11, which isn’t much, but is some.

The area that remains is a large hole in the financial district where sunshine graces the floor. There are a few cranes, yards and yards of fences and many banners advertising the new memorial to come. I could not begin to fathom what that day brought to the city, to this area, to the families affected.

_MG_2798Down the street some, there was a 9/11 remembrance stop that we ducked into. It has a pictorial rendition of the events that occurred that fateful day. A moment that brought tears to my eyes was seeing the ephemera of notes and photos on this makeshift memorial representing many firefighters that had lost their lives fighting to free many more. When I saw a man’s wedding band at the foot of this statue, my tears welled over. It was well worth the stop to remember our fallen heroes.

Untitled-18While in the financial district, I made Andy visit the famous bull for his obligatory photo (all decked out for Christmas, nice!):

_MG_2763-EditSince we were visiting the city right after the big blizzard, snow on the sides of the road were plentiful. Here’s Sarah enjoying a good old fashioned snowball fight- right there in the city!

_MG_2793In order to get everything in we wanted to do (and keep the girls warm!), Andy masterminded this great plan: travel, walk a little, do an indoor activity and then back to traveling. So, we’d walk, take the subway, walk, take the subway etc. The girls LOVED the subway.

_MG_2808-EditAnd they loved being indoors! Each day we had at least one hot chocolate, but on this very special day, we waited (and waited) at the famous Serendipity for one of these special treats- a frozen hot chocolate:

_MG_3025_MG_3021-EditLuckily Dylan’s Candy Bar was just down the street so we popped into there while Andy and Lolo held our places in the line for Serendipity. The girls thought it was fantastic. Okay, so did I.

_MG_2997_MG_2998Just around the corner off 5th Ave. was FAO Schwarz, a great distraction from the cold– for at least three hours. We gave it probably one, but there was an entire floor we didn’t even visit! We arrived there just in time for two employees to display how the BIG piano works. Then they welcomed the kids on to perform for us. I so wanted to strip my shoes off and jump on, it looked like SO much fun:

Untitled-19Around the corner is one outdoor stop I’d like to visit with a few more degrees warming the air, but we made do and the girls had a blast at Central Park:

_MG_2938This sign made me laugh out loud:_MG_2937Our only family photo that we didn’t pay for:

_MG_2945-EditWe were very touristy in our visit- neither Andy nor I had ever been to the Empire State Building, so we went to the 86th floor to see the city lights at night. Impressive, New York, impressive:

_MG_2858It sure was chilly on the viewing deck, so we headed back down to the street level and saw this on Christmas Eve Eve:

Untitled-17On the evening of Christmas Eve, we found ourselves at Time Square with about a million other people, eating from a hot dog cart and visiting Toys ‘R Us. It was pure craziness. This was our last sight from Manhattan as we headed back to our hotel on Staten Island. I didn’t even mention that we got to take the ferry in and out every day and pass the Statue of Liberty. No one minded except when we were five-ten minutes late for the ferry. Or as Andy said, just 20 minutes early for the next one. ha.

_MG_3070In the end, NYC is doable with three kids if you’re willing to hunt for bathrooms along your route, squash between hundreds of people and put up with long lines and sometimes, rude folks. We had an amazing experience and everyone we asked in the subway or on streets were more than willing to help with directions. New Yorkers get a bad rep, I think.

We absolutely can’t wait to visit the city again and check off a few more life experiences!

The Nontraditional Christmas Vacation: NYC

I had been wanting to visit New York City for about six months now and when the weather was fairly warm, we couldn’t figure out a sitter situation to escape to one of the most energized cities I’ve ever been to. So, we put the plan on the back burner and thought we’d wait until next fall and enlist the help of our folks. But we started to think about it aloud and thought, hey, maybe we could visit as a family. Over Christmas!

How magical!

Untitled-13The older girls enjoyed ice skating at Rockefeller Plaza with Andy while Lauren and I stood on the sidelines and cheered:

Untitled-15

And watched with amazement at the amount of people that could physically squeeze into an outdoor plaza while admiring the beauty above them:

_MG_3067We pit stopped at this famous shop for what seemed like four hours.

Untitled-14But with the holiday window displays and Santaland attractions, it was hard to leave (oh! And they had bathrooms, very important when traveling with three kids):

_MG_2902Untitled-16_MG_2893My personal favorite: the ornaments hanging from the ceiling inside Macy’s- LOVE the red, love the ribbon.

_MG_2883We took the girls to a charming children’s book store: Books Of Wonder, for which the store in You’ve Got Mail is based on. The girls loved it, as well as the bonus: Cupcake Cafe!

_MG_2821_MG_2830_MG_2818Darling, right?

It looks like I may have to do a second post, I’m burning the midnight oil again. Sigh… But I’m SO very glad that we took the plunge and went to New York City over Christmas with the girls. Who knows when  we will ever get another chance to do this at such a magical time of year.

{4 days ’till Christmas}: On the Road

This is Andy blogging from the road. We are on the 78 and just crossed the Deleware in the opposite direction that GW did one cold night. “Love Shack” is playing and Susie is obviously driving. 55 miles left baby. BTW Russell got robbed.

Here is the sunset from my window if I can figure out how to post it with the Wordpress iPhone app.

{6 days ’til Christmas}: Then she turned three.

This morning was not so much a sleep-in day as a birthday girl remembred bright and early that she was counting down to this day for like, a month.

“MOM! It’s my burfday!”

Yep, it sure is, Lolo.

There have been many signs this past year that we are baby free, but having your youngest turn three is probably the most present reminder that we are out of the diaper changing stage and into the discover and explore the world with a booming vocabulary stage. This girl can talk! And sing. And dance. And count. And is so incredibly helpful! But did I mention she’s mischievous? Oh yes.

Our birthday morning tradition for the girls has been grabbing a box of fresh donuts- Andy did not disappoint anyone this morning by going the extra mile (or 12) for the famous Krispy Kreme specials (we only do this 3X a year, so you know, it’s okay). Lauren loved her special sprinkle ones (made complete by one of her favorite cartoon friends, Mickey)- the photo of the day:

Untitled-11

After church, I pulled her outside to grab a few photos in her little cupcake tee, because you know, she was festive for her birthday! The problem with Ohio in December is that I have about twenty seconds to get a cute shot before she quits on me because of the cold air. ha.

Untitled-12

Happy 3rd birthday, Lauren. We love you so very much, cutie.

{7 days ’til Christmas} : The White Stuff

Back in the day (before kids, before Andy), I had this little thing I looked forward to every weekend- Saturday sleep-in days. This was my only day of the week that I did not set the alarm for. I looked forward to it EVERy week and it was sacred. “Please do not call me before 9am. I will be sleeping,” I shared with anyone that would listen. Even my mom.

This morning I was dead to the world still at 7:45 which is wonderful and almost unheard of  in a house of children under four feet tall and a husband that is bright-eyed and bushy tailed before the sunlight makes its way through the blinds. The littlest patter of feet came running inside of my room and climbed into my warm haven with frigid toes and snuggles. GOod days start off that way, don’t they? Even if sacred Saturday sleep-in days are interrupted. Then she wiggled and started to play with the alarm clock’s radio so she got kicked out of the bed and less than two minutes later I hear the pitter patter of footsteps on the floor below us. And. A very loud announcement: “Mama! It’s schnowing!”

It was perfect. And sleep-in day had officially gave way to snow day!

Before long, we were all peeking out from the windows looking at the amazing views of snow-covered everything (except our cars because I failed to mention here that they are now BOTH housed in our garage! Woot!).  And. They could NOT wait to get themselves out there in that fun powdery stuff.

_MG_2575-EditThank you to the Haase Family for leaving behind their sled while they went to warmer climates. SNiff.

{8 days ’til Christmas}: Buddies

My girlfriend Denee’ visited last night with her kiddos. Her youngest, Lily is just about 6 months older than my Lauren and they were so cute as they were running around the house together in their *almost* matchy-matchy attire (courtesy Matilda Jane!). I think I may have had another shot planned for this day, but as it turned out, any pair of little girls looking this cute trumps any other photo opportunity, right?

Untitled-10

{9 days ’til Christmas}: Snowman Cupcake Family

I’m a little apprehensive to build anything cake or gingerbread related after our experience a few years ago. After reading one of my favorite photographer’s blogs the other day, I looked around for supplies on hand and decided that we could pull off snowman cupcakes for our family activity that evening (not only am I fiercely behind on sending out Christmas cards and wrapping gifts, I can only seem to manage to plan one night activity one day at a time. Sigh. Luckily, the girls don’t know!).

Andy came home to the girls and I taste testing the ingredients for this guy and joined in to make five cupcakes. Of course you only see four here because the six-year-old of the house would have nothing to do with her cupcake being torn away for a family photo. But, there were five. And I only frosted the side of one since it was supposed to be a solo picture, but Andy set these guys up. Aren’t they cute?

I love these family activity nights – especially watching the girls create something on their own.  After this shot, we all gobbled them down. Oh wait, mine got sneezed on and found the round circular file instead…

Thank you for the inspiration, Carin :)

{10 days ’til Christmas}: Conquered

If you get anywhere near the post office the week before Christmas, you might be like me and have to talk yourself into first just stepping out of the hosue. But, it was inevitable. I had waited as long as I thought possible for my package to get home and for stamps to mail the Christmas cards. This year they happen to be going out in waves. I’m still holding onto a dozen or so. I just can’t get it together…

Anyway, inahle, exhale, breathe, bribe the girls and enter the big bad Beavercreek buidling.

_MG_2515-1And in just 17 minutes, we managed to pull it off! Post Office Christmas Package: Accomplished! We conquered that bad boy, woot!

{11 Days ’til Christmas}: Behind the scenes comedy

Sarah and Ashleigh’s ballet classes were performing a short little shindig in their respective classes this past week. Sarah borrowed Ashleigh’s little holiday tutu and we decked her to the tee for the festivities.

What we see here is the “after” shot where her skirt is much too short, the shoes are untied, and oh by the way, her stockings are falling off!

_MG_2488-1-Edit

Oh dear.
