May 25: Countdown to Summer

Part of May POTD

Untitled-9

Ashleigh discovered all on her own that if you compress the sides of  the slip and slide down with your foot, you can create larger shots of water on the side of the unit. She thought it was SO cool. She kept holding it down driving her big sister crazy, and then got a little sassy about it and did a dance. This shot is SO much better in color, so I’m leaving it. They all had a wonderful afternoon and if I can make  some more time this week, I’ll get a few more posted of the girls’ fun! Summer’s just right around the corner, woot!

Ten on Tuesday

1. My girlfriend Tracy (’Tutu Mama’) announced the opening of this darling boutique at our local outdoor mall the other day. I went and snatched up a couple of cutie tanks, just in time for a hot week of sunshine. Bring it.

2. We have five weeks to be out of this house. All of a sudden, I’m feeling a little pressed for time.

3. I’m burnt out on photo of the day. I’m really trying to get some motivation for this last week here, but, my balloon is deflating quickly. Bbbbfffppppttttt.

4. Speaking of balloons, I bought a pack of water balloons for the girls the other day- it took 30 minutes for me to get them all full and less than three for them to use ‘em up. You know what came next right? Mom, can you fill some more?  Sure, honey, maybe in August.

5. I cleaned out our junk drawer today- I had an entire pile dedicated to girls hair stuff and girls small-toys-that-go-upstairs-but-wind-up-in-the-junk-drawer. What is that about?

6. I have been reading the same book for far too long. Mr. McCourt, you don’t appeal to me when Nora Roberts is awaiting my attention. I can’t believe I’m admitting this, I’m currently shaking my head in disbelief. I’m blaming my friend Susan who ordered the first round for Book Club…

7. My new running shoes have already logged 20 miles since I got them last week- super excited to be running the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon this fall and see some familiar faces!

8. The girls and I have been recipients of cookouts and pizza nights three out of the past four nights- I can’t remember the last time I cooked a real meal. Unless you count Edna Mae’s Sour Cream Pancakes (from the PW cookbook) on Sunday morning before church- they were delicious. Please run to your dairy department and add sour cream to your pancakes, and use this recipe. Amazing.

9. Which do you  prefer: Polka dots or stripes?

10. If you’re into Family Nights, go see what Cathy’s family did this past week, it made me smile and think: Awesome! I think it’s time to resurrect Family Night around here, T-3weeks!

May 24: You Complete Me.

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9530-EditThis little gadget came into my life about 7 months ago. Andy and I spent some time contemplating getting it- the price was kind of high, but its benefits seem to far outweigh our reservations. We had been driving somewhere one afternoon last fall discussing where a food place was and we both said, “If we had an iPhone, we could get the address right now, ” and the same comment was made over and over about places to eat out of our area, or what was the weather in another town, etc. We finally decided to pony up and buy the amazing iPhone that the world was buzzing about.

And we love it. When we went to New York last December, Andy would whip that thing out and type in “Starbucks” and fifteen hundred would pop up and he could click on walking directions to the nearest one and we would instantly have access to a restroom and a coffee place- a good combination when you have three kids and  a cold mama. The iPhone would tell us which subway stop to take and exit when going from downtown to midtown. It has super cool things called “apps” that you can download (some free, some not free) that easily give reviews of restaurants in the area, provide juvenile games the girls could enjoy, tools that can be used to hang a photo frame level, etc. Our iPhone’s play our favorite music from our own, to Pandora, to the local radio station. We can get local weather or international weather. It tells me the time (I don’t wear a watch on a regular basis), it keeps my calendar dates straight, all of my contacts are handy and oh by the way, it’s my phone! I can talk on it and text! Nice.

To say that this little gadget is cool is an understatement. It has definitely changed some of the ways of doing around here, in mostly a good way. I joked with Andy one time that ‘his other wife’ was getting more attention than me- you can surf the web in these things, too, you see. I guess it’s embarrassing to admit that sometimes we sit on the sofa and do our own surfing on our own iPhones. It’s not super ideal to navigate, but it’s available. Anyway, if you’re on the fence about getting an iPhone and don’t have to sacrifice cable to get it (we miss cable, too), I highly recommend it. We love it.

May 23: Town Hall Theatre

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

Untitled-8On Sunday, the girls and I headed south to see a stage production of Disney’s Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty at a charming little theatre in Centerville called Town Hall Theatre. The surrounding area is adorable with brick buildings and incredible visual interest in the way of architecture & presentation (for me at least). There is a Panera Bread right next door, which is how I happened upon the quaint little area after a haircut one day. There wasn’t much room inside to take pictures- the theatre is old and teeny tiny, so when more than five people gather in it, you put your camera away and enjoy the experience, if you know what I mean. It’s okay, the clock right out front reminded me of a framed print I saw once that I would love to create a wall around- a wall of clocks seems so cool to me. And a shot of the front steps leading into the theatre did not disappoint either. Bricks + black/white = cool shot in my book.

May 22: Ballerina Picture Day

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

The ballerinas of the house had their recital pictures taken today even though we’re three weeks out from the actual recital date. Last year, it was a heavy mess to combine individual images, team images, rehearsal, and the actual recital on the same afternoon (you think!), so the owner/ dance instructor split  the dates this year. My older girls were over the moon excited for today because someone (me) promised to put on (a little bit of) make-up for pictures. The result? Two slightly, very happy, dolled up girlies. I can’t resist sharing more than one today- please bear with me.

Ashleigh laughing at me being goofy post-pictures:

_MG_9478That same cutie in color. I think that might be my eye color on her. Nice.

It’s amazing to me how a little color can change the mood of an image so much. Well, and maybe a smile. Here’s a sneak peek of Sarah’s costume, too- they are dancing to a Sound of Music song.

May 21: I Wish I Could Take My Camera Into the Gym

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9452I’ve been a member of this gym for over a year now. The facility is pretty amazing inside, a running track upstairs, a state of the art spinning facility, a swimming pool, racquetball courts, classes galore, a place for my kiddos to play, and I mean ON a play structure!, as well as my personal favorite- a cardio cinema. I would love to take my camera IN and snap a few shots to share, but you’re going to have to take my word, it’s pretty stinkin’ cool inside. One of the things I wanted to do with this photo challenge was not only to work on my black and white shots this month, but also share a little bit of the everyday of our lives. The shot of the gym here represents my morning routine- as well as my commitment to belonging to the gym. See that sign that advertises only $19.95/month? Yea, it went up about two months AFTER I joined.

Of course. So I’m getting every penny out of my contract, folks. And honestly, I don’t mind paying more- it’s a pretty awesome gym.

May 20: Gymnastics Day

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9391-EditI wish I could accurately describe Lauren’s excitement the one morning a week that I announce it’s gymnastics day. She carefully chooses & dresses in a leotard as soon as breakfast is swallowed down and proceeds to gallop and prance all over until it’s FINALLY time to head out to the gym. She has so much fun jumping and rolling and (trying to) balance across the beam with her classmates. One of my favorite parts of the course is the rings where she swings and kicks her legs up up to make them parallel to the ground. I waved to her one time today (my mistake!) and after that, every time she came around and got to the rings, she let go too soon and waved again at me. What’s a mom to do, but wave back? Oh, my little heart, she is so precious.

I hate to break it to Lolo that her class will end in just a couple of weeks, we’re trying to work it out that she can extend through June, but at least for now, she’s got Thursday mornings- Gymnastics Day!

May 19: Looking Back

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9384-EditMy girlfriend Brooke came over today with her girls and somehow, my scrapbooks made an appearance from the basement (she’s crafty, so there’s that). We chatted over them for a bit and kind of left them there when the girls and I rudely dashed out for ballet class. The happy ending is, when we had some down time late in the day, the girls were all over those books like flies on butter and wanted to look at every single one. Nothing like a little joy mixed with a lot of guilt for not having much passed 2008’s birthdays. At least they have their baby scrapbooks. :)

May 18: Kitchen Sink

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9367-EditIt’s May 18th (in Indiana still) and  today I struggled to find something creative to take a picture of. While I spent the afternoon beautifying our kitchen (last night’s amazing dinner and this morning’s Bible study muffin dishes were EVERYwhere), I thought, I’ve taken a picture of everything BUT the kitchen sink.

So here you have it: the kitchen sink. It’s stainless steel, which I love for easy clean-up, it has a window above that peers out into the backyard (to the siding of our neighbor’s house), and it has a large enough window sill to house two Mother’s Day plants from the girls one very good treasure hunting find at Goodwill last month. When clean, this little spot makes me quite happy. Add a little iTunes to the mix and we’ve got a regular little afternoon party (bubbles included!).

May 17: Puppy Chow

Part of May POTD: B & W Style

_MG_9362-EditOne of the snacks that Missy shared with us on Sunday was this homemade stuff called Puppy Chow. It was incredibly delicious and the girls talked me into making a batch just about the minute we walked into the door. It sounded easy enough, so I went ahead and got the recipe, went to the store and whipped up a batch. The girls helped by shaking the brown paper bag full of powdered sugar and ooey gooey cereal covered in peanut butter, chocolate & butter. Are you sold on it, yet? You should be, it’s delicious.

The thing is, my first try at it was too clumpy. In the real puppy chow, you should be able to see traces of the Crispix cereal, not oversized golfballs like I have in the bowl above. I wasn’t able to make a second batch since I only bought one box of cereal, but you can bet I will be making more of this puppy chow soon… and maybe adjusting the ratio of cereal to ooey gooy-ness to make less poop-like chow.
