Ten on Tuesday: Adventures Around Ohio Wrapped Up

While Andy was away on a three-month internship in Washington, D.C. this past spring, I thought the best way to help pass the time would be to go on daytime adventures with the girls. I made a list of places in the area that had either been recommended to me, or that I was curious to see with the girls and we set off. It’s going to be impossible to give each visit it’s own post in the coming weeks, so I’ve decided to wrap them up here in a quick Ten on Tuesday post- at least for documentation for our family.

Oh boy, was I excited that we got all ten checked off our list this past week-  I think the girls were, too! No more dragging them across Ohio to see what there is to see…

1. April 17: Aullwood Audobon Center… Spring was in full bloom mid-April and we enjoyed a hike out in nature, the hands-on learning center and a nearby farm with horses, sheep and cartwheels.

_MG_7078-Edit2. April 18: Whit’s Frozen Custard in Lebanon… I already blogged this excursion down south- the custard did not disappoint, the little downtown area was just as charming as I remember and we even did a little antiquing with “hands to our sides.” I am seriously a broken record. Remember Lauren with long hair?

_MG_7216-Edit3. May 8: 2nd Street Market… A perfect rainy day for a visit to a semi-indoor Farmer’s Market. I had only read about this quaint little spot near downtown Dayton and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of people visiting on a normal morning. We bought some vegetables and candy and as promised, supported the lone creperie. There were even Czech dancers there performing a dance that would be later performed at the World Festival. I can’t wait to take Andy on my birthday this weekend!

_MG_7946-Edit

4. May 8: Dayton Art Institute… We had to double up some of our adventures due to visits to and from D.C. and birthday parties and cookouts. As it turned out, I didn’t leave a lot of flexibility in our spring schedule, but we made do. The architecture on the exterior of the art institute is extremely impressive, although I don’t think the girls gave a second look. I took plenty of pictures that might look cool as black and whites but I was impressed with this children’s display in the basement with thousands of 3D paper butterflies surrounding gumball statue. The artwork is titled “Shimmering Madness” and although I’m not confident that shimmering belongs in there, madness most definitely applies. It was unique to say the least.

_MG_8036-Edit5. May 16… Columbus Zoo: We met friends Missy, Maya and Laney at the Columbus Zoo where we tailgated a lunch, visited Asia, Africa and Australia, and went on a carousel. The girls usually love most zoos, but this one was impressive for not only its sights, but also it’s layout. You definitely need a full day or perhaps two days to enjoy it all. It would probably be more enjoyable to visit when the polar bears weren’t fresh from the Arctic and on a Tuesday morning rather than a Sunday afternoon, but overall, a successful and enjoyable day!

_MG_9333-Edit6. May 23: Town Hall Theatre Performance… The girls all enjoyed the live performance of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty on stage. We had incredible seats for our first theatrical performance together and I was super impressed with how well even Lauren did watching the shows. It lasted maybe two hours with an intermission and we all couldn’t stop talking about how well the young performers did! I’m pretty sure more performance are in their near future (This was an act from Sleeping Beauty)!

Untitled-37. June 6: Strawberry Festival… We already discussed this afternoon here- we went, we saw, we got muddy.

Untitled-2

8. June 11: Newport Aquarium… So, when the girls and I were driving toward Cincinnati, I didn’t actually *know* that this adventure was taking across the state line- that’s the advantage to living in the Midwest instead of the great states of the west where you drive for days in brown and heat and stay in the same state. In the Midwest, you get to state line hop, ha! The aquarium located in Kentucky did not disappoint and as it turned out- the girls were really into the shark and toad exhibit. Sarah begged to two-finger pet the smaller sharks. I couldn’t risk her losing two fingers under my supervision, though. And the toads- completely and utterly gross. Seriously, gross. But this is my favorite shot looking up, so no toads to gross you out, too.

Untitled-19. June 16: The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis… I was worried we weren’t going to be able to make this excursion happen. It was the furthest away (a two hour drive) and the weather between here and there has been stormy. I don’t do stormy, actually. I saw an opening last week and took it and am so glad we did. This might deserve it’s own post in the future, there were a wonderful amount of hands-on exhibits for the girls and they genuinely had fun. Their favorite was by far the Barbie experience, but I loved watching them in the tree house and ice cream parlor pretending to be grown-ups. It’s all perspective, isn’t it?

_MG_0455-Edit

10. June 18: Oxford… There is a town further south and more west that had been on my radar for quite some time. I  did a little researching and found out that besides its town center charm and well known university, Oxford is home to the oldest covered bridge in Butler County. I took the girls there first for their yearly photograph to replace last year’s- I love, love covered bridges and old barns. Maybe it’s because they are so unique to where I am from in California, or, maybe they’re fun to take pictures of and remind one’s self of another time period when such places were built with function in mind and not for an awe – factor. Either way… they’re on my way cool list. We strolled, we ate, we did some sweating.

_MG_0459-EditI currently don’t have anything on our list of things to do this summer (except to move) – and with the busy spring we had, I’m okay with that…

The Pixie Cut

As it turns out, the girls don’t have their hair appointment until a week from this coming Monday and I couldn’t wait one more day to gather a new semblance of Lauren’s hair. To be honest, she botched it up on all sides and unless she kept a pony tail in, it was a giant mess. Acording to the hair stylist, we had two options- keep it as is (which wasn’t an option to me) or go pixie cut.

I chose the latter and about 3/4 of the way through, my baby girl started crying in the chair.

“I don’t like this boys haircut,” was caught in between tears and sniffs.

Heart wrenching, right? You’re telling me. She continued crying all the way home and even when we distracted her with stickers and the leftover iced mocha I had, she remembered her new haircut when I tried to get a couple of pictures for you. She is not posing here at all- this is her shying away from me.

Untitled-6

After a few more minutes, a bribe of chocolate, a change of headbands and a reassurance that she looked more like Molly Mahoney than Mr. Magorium (hey, I love that movie!), I lucked out and got one or two smiles.

Untitled-7

And if any of my kids can pull of the pixie cut, it’s most definitely Lauren! There’s something about that cute little face.

But we’re still locking up the scissors so this doesn’t happen EVER again. Ahem, I’m mostly telling myself that.

On Why I Should’ve Done a Better Job of Putting the Scissors Away.

When I walked into my bathroom last night, I saw a pile of hair on the floor- more hair than I brush out of my own on a given day, and definitely the color of one my children’s.

_MG_0362-Edit

Oh no, I thought. Which one did this? After a closer examination- I saw it was longer than Sarah’s hair and darker than Ashleigh’s hair. And so I marched into Lauren’s room after midnight, woke that kid up and verified that she indeed turned Edward Scissorhands on herself. She was missing the back right side of her locks. And some on the left. And a little up front.

Sigh.

This is the face I got when I confronted her about it this morning. She knew I wasn’t happy with her.

_MG_0350-EditThe majority of the damage.

_MG_0355-Edit_MG_0356-EditLuckily, she already has a hair appointment on Monday, although I’m pretty sure we weren’t thinking pixie cut in her near future. The thing is, I know better than to leave the scissors I use for bang trimmings in reach of small hands. This has happened before with the three-year-old version of Sarah. I suppose I was in need of a good reminder  in putting the scissors away in a locked cupboard.

Of course, with a face this cute, it’s not hard to forgive her for cutting off her precious hair. Even if it’s only taken three years to get this long.

Ten on Tuesday

*please pardon the extreme randomness

1. I much prefer whiteboard markers and whiteboards to chalk and blackboards.

2. Do you ever compare your left fingernail growth with your right fingernail growth? I forget who taught me this silly habit years ago, but it’s always my left handed fingers that win.

3. It’s easier to find viable veins in my left arm than my right.

4. Today is our eighth wedding anniversary- what were you doing on June 15, 2002? I was wearing a beautiful white dress with purple toe polish. One of those two can be said about today.

5. I am thinking about getting presciprion sunglasses. We’re moving to the desert. I don’t wear contact lenses anymore. I think I’ve justified it enough in two sentences.

6. Confession: I’ve started to give stores our former phone number when they ask at the cash register. WHY does it seem like all stores want all my contact information? Seriously folks, can we do the transaction and you can stop pretending like you need my phone number to charge me for a shirt?

7. Speaking of cashiers (we were, right?), I recently sent an online not-so-good evaluation of a local Panera swearing off that store forever (which isn’t hard to do when you’re leaving in a month) and they sent an apology and reimbursed me for my trouble, plus some. I’m thankful that they did not just let my note go by the wayside, but I’d still like to see some real change in their customer service department and I’m afraid my one little note probably won’t do the trick.

8. My parents keep sending me text pictures of their zucchini garden. I’m buying them shirts that say: Benfield Garden Pride. And charging them for when I go over my text allotment for the month. hee-hee.

9. For those following the drama that the paperwork has been for our upcoming move, you’ll be happy to hear: We have “orders.” What does that mean? We can schedule packers/movers and hopefully meet the date to get out of our house by the end of the month. For those who’ve inquired, thank you for thinking of us!

10. My neighbor friend Lisa celebrated her birthday this past weekend so a couple of us plotted to start her day off in a celebratory mood. We planted some 39 pinwheels in her garden and put these half-full cups of water on her driveway to wake up to. There were some signs and artwork in chalk, too, and luckily, she has a wonderful sense of humor :) Andy had no idea that I moonlight as a prankster.

_MG_0135-EditHappy Tuesday, friends!

Look Who’s (finally) Missing a Tooth!

Sarah has had a couple of wiggly teeth for quite some time now, she goes back and forth with working  the front top left and the bottom right front tooth back and forth, back and forth, and tonight- TONIGHT!, the fruit of her labor finally paid off when she happily announced from the bathroom mirror that IT came out, it came out! How fun that we were Skyping with Grammy and Tyler during this momentous occasion?

Here’s my newly turned seven-year-old with her first toothless grins:

_MG_0314-Edit

_MG_0317-EditLater this evening, I was telling Andy about the wonderful timing of finishing up the felt pouch to hold Sarah’s tooth to which he replied, “I didn’t have any fancy pouch for my baby teeth, I think we put our teeth in an envelope.”

Like we could ever do such a thing with felt and embroidery floss hanging around this house, right?

_MG_0318-EditShe is so incredibly happy that one tooth is finally missing- seriously, I beleive she left her first grade class as the only kid with a full set of baby teeth. Oh well, she’s happy now and gets to join the toothless club.

_MG_0320-EditI peeked in on her during her story retelling to Andy. She was all sunshine and smiles, that one.

_MG_0326-Edit

Happiness is…

loving on the dad when he’s home for the weekend.

_MG_0247-Edit_MG_0245-EditWhen it’s all said and done, Andy won’t even be home for 48 hours this weekend (he’s home for our older girls’ dance recital), but as you can see, Lauren is making every moment home with him count.

Just as it should be. Over and out.

Adventures Around Ohio: The Infamous Strawberry Festival

I loaded up the girls this past Sunday afternoon and we headed about 30 minutes northwest to the small town of Troy, Ohio- best known for it’s annual Strawberry Festival. The girls were somewhat on board with the idea, I’m all about enjoying sunshine, warmth, and new adventures around the area!

I knew it would be busy-  my neighbor  told me that his family forever swore off the Strawberry Festival after one poor experience, and let me tell you- I should have listened! Much like when we visited the Columbus Zoo, the shade tarps were teeming with people and the other half of Ohio had shown up for this day’s event.

Case in point: People everywhere.

_MG_0020-5To make matters worse, the storms that had come through the week before left a muddy mess in the walking area. Ick. Yuck. Gross.

_MG_0028-7My three-year-old had a heck of a time wearing flip flops (she calls the “sip sops”) in the muddy mess. She did not want mud on her toes thankyouverymuch. Poor thing.

Untitled-3To be honest, Ashleigh was having a pretty rough time at the festival. She didn’t want to share a strawberry cheesecake dessert with the rest of us… but at $5 a pop, we’re sharing.

_MG_0024-6

Things looked up when I bumped into friends Susan and Leslie- although Leslie was agreeable in that we were both acting like Cranky McFrankies.

_MG_0019-Edit-12Susan knows me well, though and she got me to jump- which is a natural high for me (pun intended) and a smile might have crept up on my face.

Untitled-1The girls got to do a ring toss and win flimsy toys, as well as get super cute strawberries painted on them that wiped off almost immediately:

_MG_0032-Edit-13_MG_0034-8_MG_0035-9Untitled-4Two views that made me smile- the view of the booths lined up above the Miami River and woodcut letters that were being sold individually made for an aesthetically clean line of design in this old Coke crate:

_MG_0004-2_MG_0006-3Are you wondering where the strawberries are at the infamous Strawberry Festival? They were there- just under disguise: strawberry salsa, strawberry burritos, strawberry butter, strawberry cheesecake.

_MG_0059-10In the end, I’m glad we went because bumping into my friends led to  Strawberry Festival Round II at Susan’s with dancing and a wonderful vodka sauce pasta (sans strawberries)

Shall we give a moment of silence to my ick covered Privo’s that were not expecting a mud bath by any means?

_MG_0060-11Infamous Strawberry Festival Adventure: Fail.

Ten on Tuesday

1. Hey, Soul Sister… was downloaded last week compliments of the Shizam app somewhere on the backroads of Virginia- thank you technology for figuring out the title and band, I can’t get this song out of my head :)

2. Have you recently been a recipient of someone’s time? I have- I am super blessed for dear friends – one in particular that gave up their afternoon to watch my girls and allow me  to go see a semi-private showing of a DAYtime movie. I kind of felt like I was cheating on my kids sitting in the dark for 2 1/2 hours. Thank you, friend.

3. I was thinking out loud that I need to finish up my Ten Free Things I Love To Do series soon- it’s been dragging on… and I keep forgetting and, and…

4. Another week = no orders. Another week closer to the end of June = slightly more sweat.

5. Is there anything better than spending a Tuesday night at a friend’s house dancing the hours away while our kids run around entertaining us? It’s even better when they join us.

6. Andy called tonight and said we had to have a talk. I started to get nervous- what did I not tell him about that I bought recently? I am sure he knew about the gladiator sandals… “Did you know that you sent 262 texts last month?” to which I replied, “Nope, had no idea. I thought I had unlimited texting.” Then he laughed because he probably told me that I did at some point, but wanted to know when a teenager moved into our house? And he said I could send/receive 7 a day to stay at 200.

7. I told my mom about this funny texting conversation and she proceeded to tell me the amount of texts my brother and sister sent/received last month: Ty: 7,654  and  Becca: 5,435. Not. Even. Exaggerating. I have a feeling my little 262 texts in a one month does not put me even close to “teenager” status anymore.

8. My older girls are super excited for their dance recital this Saturday- and I’m running the Yellow Springs 5K in the am just so I can get a cool tie-die T-Shirt. How pathetic, right?

9. Our church has such a cool interactive Family Ministry- I’m considering asking them to begin a long distance partnership so I can still receive the family ministry materials. Probably not, huh?

10 Sarah finished up her first grade year today- I love the side-by-side comparison shots I’ve seen in the blogosphere from the first day to the last day lately- so I thought I’d join in. What do you think- has she changed much (first day back in August 2009 on the left, May 2010, on the right?):

Untitled-10If you thought she was one cute and sassy first grader, I believe that she has grown even more beautiful this past year! She has such a kind heart and continues to be helpful around our home and with friends in many ways. She has blossomed into quite a reader this past school year and I am excited to see what second grade holds for her this fall!

Dress-up Those Dollar Spot Finds

Every once in awhile, I spy some super cute packs of pre-made cards that catch my eye at Michaels or Target- and they only cost $1! Recently, I was gifted with a pack and because I have so much guilt using pre-made cards, they sat in my craft drawer for awhile. Until, I pulled them out and thought, it’s time to dress these guys up.

It’s easy to do when you have a plethora of crafty supplies on hand: ribbon, pretty paper and doodads. Take a look below- the original design appears first and the dressed-up cards are easy to detect below them.

_MG_9395_MG_9396_MG_9453_MG_9454On the backside of the pre-made dollar spot find it was plain aqua/turquoise-ish blue and I thought outside of the box and cut the card in two (hey, bonus- a 2fer!), so the above card is the front side and card below uses the backside. I think this might be by most favorite color combination (and the doily makes me smile, too):

_MG_9455Alrighty, up for a weekend challenge? Go grab a pack of dollar spot cards(there’s a good excuse for a Target stop today!) and get them dressed up! Let me know if you do, I’d love to see what you create!

Ten on Tuesday

1. I am out of detergent. Like call the neighbor and ask to borrow some detergent the night before you leave out of town out.

2. Are you on Twitter? That place cracks me up, but this fan favorite had me giggling: Ken Levine tweeted: Al & Tipper Gore are separating. Who gets custody of the Internet?

3. I tell you, some people have all the wit.

4. Andy doesn’t have orders. No orders = no scheduling movers = no getting on a list for base housing at our next base. This might be a good time to do a little PSA: Don’t procrastinate paperwork. The military peeps love them some paperwork to be filled out.

5. Ashleigh finished up her last day of preschool on Friday and Lauren ended her little playgroup day as well. They both think they are going to Kindergarten in the fall.

6. The GPS in my truck took me on one too many backroads from Virginia to Ohio today so I fired it. Override, turned it off, unplugged it. Do you see my tongue sticking out at you, Mr. I-Know-The-Best-Route-To-Go GPS? Luckily, Ms. Felicity has a better idea. Yea for the Google App.

7. I have four of ten places left to cross off our Spring Adventure list before moving. I don’t know if we can do them all but we are certainly going to try.

8. Do you like to buy super cute summer tanks at really decent prices? I’ve picked up a few of these tanks with gathered  edges at Target this spring. They are only $8- shhh… don’t tell too many people or they won’t have your size ! Here’s an insiders tip: buy a size down for a more fitted look.

9. I also stepped out of my comfort zone and ordered these gladiator sandals to replace my Bendolino’s that broke- twice. Arg. But, I’m hopeful with seventeen straps, these new sandals won’t be trying to break free from my feet.

987596-p-DETAILED

10. I really try to hand over my camera to strangers to get us all in a family shot from time to time. But its results like this that make me shake my head and wonder, “What DID he see in there?” and “Why did I bother?” Ah well, here we all are together at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. yesterday- uncropped for added humor, of course.
