Last weekend, a few friends and I headed to Downtown L.A. to the area where fabric stores congregate together at 9th and Maple and is better known as the Fabric District. We left all our precious possessions at home (mainly the kids) and had ourselves a girls day hitting the pavement to find all the best deals.

Once we parked and landed on street level, myriads of fabric welcomed us! We entered a couple of stores and were blown away by the rainbow of colors and countless bolts that lined the walls, the floors, the everything… How does once even begin to choose which one to buy!?

The truth is, you don’t. I think you have to go in with a game plan and be willing to adjust the plays…

(the woman was in all my shots, boo)

I fell in love with fabric exactly this color that had swirly embroidery on it- it was at the second store we visited and was such a good deal that I couldn’t pass it up- you’ll see some project with it this year, hopefully!
I also loved this purplish rosette fabric that Ba-zhee is showing off- it was the only item I bartered on- a total of $1 off the yard. I’m so NOT the bartering type. Don’t send me in to buy a car, okaY?
I am imagining a cute valance here for Lauren’s room….
Meredith deliberated on some decor fabric for her window treatments… she was in the company of enablers so she went with it in the end.

A couple doors down, this display of home fabric was smiling at us as we entered- is it not screaming SUSIE all over it?
In this same store, there were walls upon walls of ribbon & trim, just beautiful!

Oh! For the yarn lovers!
Spitting distance from the Fabric District is the Fashion District and a smaller area within that known as Santee Aleey. When we were doing our homework on places to see, Santee Alley was listed, so ventured in. It was nutso. I’m not sure what I expected, but the amount of people was not one. Someone forgot to remind me that we are back in Southern California, the melting pot of the west?
I’m pretty sure Kelly’s face sums up what we all were thinking- HOLY shopping hazard!

I was a little bit afraid of losing my shopping crew in there- no lollygagging in the back!
This shot is for my sister- she’s a huge fan of $5 shoes (me not so much, they usually cut into my feet):
Meredith scored a $6 strapless dress, but the rest of us were happy with our fabric finds
We headed over to Olvera Street for a late lunch (ahem, early dinner) afterwards… I can’t believe that in all the years that I lived in California, I never took the time to go down there. What a cool little place to celebrate Mexican heritage, i.e., buy huaraches, eat authentic Mexican food, be entertained by Mariachi bands and accompanied by Mexican folk dances. It was pretty cool to be there (I’ve been thinking about going down there since I saw a picture of my parents with their good friends taken there almost 20 years ago!) with my friends and just take it all in.

I missed the performance of the Mexican folk dancers, but this is where gatherers watched and took it in. I was a little bit loving the sunshine this late in the day.
A great day with great friends. I am blessed to share a season with these ladies!
(L-r): me, Meredith, Dayna, & Kelly!
And P.S. If you think you might venture down to the Fabric District, this is a helpful link for in-the-know information from someone that already did her homework for us!
