Crafty Mama Monday: Project 9

Lined Tote Bag

I’ve had this tote bag in mind for a few weeks, but executing it was a bit more difficult than I had anticipated. I’ve only done lining on one item prior to this, and it was already a month ago so I had forgotten how the pieces worked together as far as which ones were inside out and right side out when sewing the edges together… anyway, I got it figured out after one go around (thank goodness for a seam ripper, my new best friend)… and despite the two layers of interfacing being on only one side (an oops that I am not entirely too worried about), it still has practical use written all over it!

_MG_4555

You know what’s really cool about this tote? You can’t see any of the mistakes because they are all on the inner parts of it! Oh, and the fabric is kind of rocking my world, too! Need some? Buy it here: Magnolia Lane. Yum!

_MG_4556_MG_4558

I’m pleased with the basic design of this bag, but am looking forward to adding some pockets and flowers to the next one!

L.A. Fabric District

Last weekend, a few friends and I headed to Downtown L.A. to the area where fabric stores congregate together  at 9th and Maple and is better known as the Fabric District. We left all our precious possessions at home (mainly the kids) and had ourselves a girls day hitting the pavement to find all the best deals.

_MG_4398

Once we parked and landed on street level, myriads of fabric welcomed us! We entered a couple of stores and were blown away  by the rainbow of colors and countless bolts that lined the walls, the floors, the everything… How does once even begin to choose which one to buy!?

_MG_4380

The truth is, you don’t. I think you have to go in with a game plan and be willing to adjust the plays…

_MG_4383

(the woman was in all my shots, boo)

_MG_4387_MG_4396I fell in love with fabric exactly this color that had swirly embroidery on it- it was at the second store we visited and was such a  good deal that I couldn’t pass it up- you’ll see some project with it this year, hopefully!

I also loved this purplish rosette fabric that Ba-zhee is showing off- it was the only item I bartered on- a total of $1 off the yard. I’m so NOT the bartering type. Don’t send me in to buy a car, okaY?

_MG_4400I am imagining a cute valance here for Lauren’s room….

Meredith deliberated on some decor fabric for her window treatments… she was in the company of enablers so she went with it in the end.

_MG_4404

A couple doors down, this display of home fabric was smiling at us as we entered- is it not screaming SUSIE all over it?

Untitled-5In this same store, there were walls upon walls of ribbon & trim, just beautiful!

_MG_4408

Untitled-6

Oh! For the yarn lovers!

_MG_4416Spitting distance from the Fabric District is the Fashion District and a smaller area within that known as Santee Aleey. When we were doing our homework on places to see, Santee Alley was listed, so ventured in. It was nutso. I’m not sure what I expected, but the amount of people was not one. Someone forgot to remind me that we are back in Southern California, the melting pot of the west?

Untitled-3I’m pretty sure Kelly’s face sums up what we all were thinking- HOLY shopping hazard!

_MG_4418

I was a little bit afraid of losing my shopping crew in there- no lollygagging in the back!

This shot is for my sister- she’s a huge fan of $5 shoes (me not so much, they usually cut into my feet):

_MG_4415Meredith scored a $6 strapless dress, but the rest of us were happy with our fabric finds :D

We headed over to Olvera Street for a late lunch (ahem, early dinner) afterwards… I can’t believe that in all the years that I lived in California, I never took the time to go down there. What a cool little place to celebrate Mexican heritage, i.e., buy huaraches, eat authentic Mexican food, be entertained by Mariachi bands and accompanied by Mexican folk dances. It was pretty cool to be there (I’ve been thinking about going down there since I saw a picture of my parents with their good friends taken there almost 20 years ago!)  with my friends and just take it all in.

_MG_4428_MG_4432

Untitled-2Untitled-4I missed the performance of the Mexican folk dancers, but this is where gatherers watched and took it in. I was a little bit loving the sunshine this late in the day.

_MG_4438A great day with great friends. I am blessed to share a season with these ladies!

_MG_4427-Edit(L-r): me, Meredith, Dayna, & Kelly!

And P.S. If you think you might venture down to the Fabric District, this is a helpful link for in-the-know information from someone that already did her homework for us!

Ten on Tuesday

1. I had this idea in my head to do a 10 Confessions on Tuesday post. But I only got to two confessions that wouldn’t overly be embarrassing (to Andy).

2. Sometimes I wish the laundry room door was still on its hinge. But it’s only been twice in 6 months, so I guess we’re okay.

3. I made the most adorable rice krispie treats for Ashleigh’s Daisy troop today- I had to use canned frosting since I was out of the right ingredients, but I’m pretty sure the girls didn’t care. So easy, so fun! I’m on the hunt for a shamrock for March 17th now….

4. My sweetheart totally surprised me with the best gift ever for Valentine’s Day: new shoes!

5. Our March edition of Family Fun arrived today- did anyone see the owl cake and cupcakes in there? I’m so all over that….After I announced to the girls that I was “dying” over them, they started imitating that silly phrase over the next six pages.  And now I have to stop saying that silly phrase, too, it’s just not so cute coming from little girls.

6. My most favorite new blog to find ideas from is Skip to My Lou- thought some other crafty friends would enjoy it, too if you haven’t landed there, yet… Go check it out, I’ll wait.

7. Did you catch any of the Grammy’s the other night? I was so excited to see Katy Perry perform Teenage Dream… and surprised at how much I enjoyed Rihanna and Eminem’s performance together.

8. I made new Bunco score sheets for our OSC group on base- here is the file if you have a local group and want some fresh new sheets! It looks weird over there, but perfect in my document. Well, just let me know if you need one, I’ll get it to you!

9. I think it’s time for a secret sweep out of the stuffed animal collection. Where do all of these furry creatures come from?

10. I can’t wait to share some photos from this past weekend’s trip to L.A. Here I am “dying” over this beautiful fabric… I mean, if I said that phrase anymore. More to come…

Crafty Mama Monday: Project 8 / Happy Valentine’s Day!

Reverse Appliqué

I surprised the girls with new heart tees this morning to wear to school for their Valentine’s Day exchanges- I did a few other projects this week, but this one totally wins for blog worthy! Each tee took maybe 20 minutes to make- so so easy!

_MG_4447(hey, Brooke! I used a hoop!)

_MG_4449mosaic55e888ccc7e1075d28a74a0af52105b6792cd564

Here’s a quick tutorial on reverse appliqué in case you want to make one, too- I knew I wanted to use embroidery floss, so I just read through it for when to cut, etc.

Valentine’s Day is a production and a half around here with three little girls oozing love out of their ears! We started aking their foamie Valentine’s for their classmates at the beginning of January and sure enough, it came down to polishing them off on Saturday night for classmates to receive them today. My aunt was able to come up on Saturday and she joined in the fun (thanks, Nana!!).

We each loved receiving a card from Andy (I love that the unique postage, too!)… I also snuck a few new colorful heart bowls into my Target cart, too, this weekend which was a special treat for them to wake up to with their t-shirts wrapped in. I tell you what– I love Valentine’s Day for sending cards and sharing sentiments with my friends and family, but to have my daughter’s share in making Valentine’s for their friends and ENJOY the process just as much as I do just might be the ultimate gift. In fact, when I started attaching little hearts on their doors two weeks ago with a little love note that said one thing I loved about them, they turned right around and made me love notes for my bedroom door- I totally didn’t expect that! What a blessing that thoughtful act was to me (never mind how many times we have swept construction paper up under the kitchen table, oomph!).

One of my favorite notes was from Ashleigh: “I love you because you make the best popcorn!”

Untitled-1

If only she knew that as soon as she learns how to use the microwave, SHE TOO can make the best popcorn!

Happy Hearts Day!

February Weekending, Part I

mosaic6086352590791dad7f4e28673f9503b372e420bdIf I ever get down about living in such a remote spot, all I have to do is hop in the car and drive a bit and there is nothing BUT action going on in Southern California! This past Sunday, I surprised the girls with a special trip to the American Girl Doll store in L.A. On the way, we hooked up with my aunt and made an afternoon of visiting The Grove and (the semi-famous) Farmer’s Market area where my daughter’s were beside themselves with delight to have this adventure be their surprise.

I’m not too savvy with how to load on flickr so that my collage will create a chronological story, but here’s the lowdown:

* Rebecca, Julie and Kit (those are the names of the dolls we own) each had their beautiful manes “professionally” styled, again, SUPER happy little girls in my care

*We walked up and down pink aisles numerous times looking for the perfect new outfits for each of the AG dolls we brought (We could have bought four goats for some very deserving families instead, I realize)

* We walked around The Grove and the Original Farmer’s Market, where my grandmother used to frequent. That was kind of cool to me, the girls just wanted candy and well, dinner.

* We spent the night at Nana’s and then headed down to Rancho Palos Verdes to catch up with one of my first friends I made when we lived in Torrance- hi Susan!

* The girls played and jumped and adventured in the woodsy backyard and then we stopped at this beautiful cliffside coast and soaked up some sunshine – and some more for my Ohio friends.

It’s amazing how much there is to do around here, if you’re willing to just drive a bit :)

Crafty Mama Monday: Project 6 & 7

Valentine’s Tea Towel & Valentine’s Pillow Case

I actually bought this colorful red/green/blue fabric with Valentine’s Day in mind. They sort of double as Christmas-y looking fabric, too, so bonus once December rolls around, right? I just used up some linen blend I had already and tried my hand at some bias tape stuff and a very simple machine, torn-edged appliqué. I had good intentions of making about eight more of these this past week, but somehow life got busy, my needle got sticky from another project and I got wrapped up in washing more fabric that was delivered.

But, they are kind of cute and I’ll probably make 10 variations of this in 2011…

_MG_4349_MG_4350

I did a little fussy cut action to get that birdy and flower in  the right window :)

_MG_4351_MG_4355

They are all rolled up and ready to be sent to one of my recipients that signed up for the handmade pledge earlier this year. :)

The Valentine  pillowcase was a joint effort with my friend Meredith (thank you, thank you!!)- she has some mad embroidery skills and I swiped the basic design of this pillow case off of pbkids’ website to send a little love to Andy. I didn’t want it to be too girly, but I just wanted him to know his “sweethearts” were thinking of him. I did a little handprint from the girls on the reverse side by outlining them in embroidery floss… I received news that it arrived to him safe and sound so I am posting this project today, too, in case you need a last minute (and easy to make) gift idea for someone you love!

_MG_4138_MG_4133_MG_4134_MG_4137

I am a huge fan of practical and functional gifts, so a pillowcase seemed like a good idea to me :)

_MG_4141Andy asked if I had a matching case here at home with his heart on it? Swooooon  :)

Our Harry Potter Fan (+ a Winner)

_MG_4165The girls attended a Harry Potter birthday party last Saturday and each came home with a set of goggles just like their wizard friend wears.

Sarah took a liking to them most, probably because she’s Harry’s most favorite fan (right after her daddy). It took some persuasion to get a picture of her in these silly glasses, but it was a bonus when she smiled and I caught a glimpse of her newly missing front tooth she’s been sprotin’ for about a week. Kind of sums her up right now: a voracious, toothless little reader.

A winner for the cutie Natural Life mug from random.org:

Screen shot 2011-02-02 at 8.23.55 PMCongratulations, Marie! I can’t wait to see your newly won “M” mug show up in your beautiful POTD project 2011!

Thank you everyone for stopping by and entering and saying hello :)

Ten on Tuesday (+ a very cute giveaway…)

1. Since we signed up for Amazon Prime, I share Andy’s Amazon account with him. It’ so funny to me when I see things like in the virtual cart called 5 Very Good Reasons to Punch a Dolphin in the Mouth when I totally know I didn’t put it there.

2. I bought a new toothbrush today. Ahhh, new bristles, I can’t hardly contain my joy!

3. Working out logistics to get a haircut is kind of tough. On one night a month, I receive free babysitting from the base and it turns out it’s the one night this month my hairstylist is out. of. town. Boo.

4. I’m considering putting blue dye in the bottom part of my hair. Hey, why  not??

5. We’ve been going to the same gymnastics center since September and  yesterday  was the first time I actually spoke to another  parent having a real conversation. You wouldn’t believe the amount of us playing on our iPhones in our own little techno geek worlds. Funny thing- my text sound sparked our conversation…

6. My friend Krista has a great countdown to Valentine’s day idea that I want to share- she is posting a heart shaped note on her kids door each night telling them one thing she loves about them. i’m all over this, come join in!

7. I really hope and hope one of my girls will play softball someday. So, so hoping.

8. Had a wonderful morning of learning and conversation at my Bible study today. We went through 1 John 3 and had an amazing exchange of ideas on one verse: God is greater than our hearts and knows everything (v. 20). This is not the right forum to go into more detail, but I will be praying that I can relay the powerful dialogue one day soon. God is greater than our hearts. I love that.

9. I have a  cross country, like-minded Crafty Mama friend that is seriously on the very same wavelength as me and sent this darling blog link over to share: check out The Salty Pineapple for some fun crafty and foodie related things! Thank you, Brooke!

10.When we were in Flagstaff this past summer, I happened upon the most darling little shop in the Old Town area that was SO me. Let me clarify by what I mean by SO ME: The entire store appealed to my crafty, cutesy, sentimental cardsy side. I could have been in there for hours. Actually, I wanted to move in. Andy couldn’t wait to get out. I bought two things that day- one flamingo bar soap for my friend Susan and this darling ceramic mug with an “S”  initial on the front that says “love the moment” on the inside rim. I love this mug. So much that I want you to have one, too. How about a drawing? Throw your name into the hat in the comments below ( must be on the blog, not a facebook comment) and I’ll pick a name on Wednesday NIGHT 8PM PST for your own initialized mug:

MUG058lg(**it appears that they are hit and miss with which initials they sale, so if it comes down to it and they don’t sale the initial you have if you win, then you can opt for the Boho style mug)!

GOod luck, thanks for stopping by today!

Crafty Mama Monday: Project 5

Project Kindle Sleeve, sort of.

This past week, I set out to make a cute holder for my colored pencils and book we are currently using for  Bible study. The tutorial I got was easy enough to follow and I even consulted a couple of friends on how I might be able to adjust it to fit my needs. I loosely based it on the idea of a crayon roll-up pack I once bought on etsy (by the way, I have complete confidence that I can make these now, woot!).

My adjustments mostly worked- I used the pattern for the Kindle 3 (the sleeve pack comes with directions and sizes for multiple e-readers) and was able to add some top stitched lines for the pencils replacing the original larger pocket. Victory was mine!

Untitled-6But, the “sleeve” part where my book was supposed to slide in actually turned out to be too small, boo! It may or may not actually fit the e-reader it is designed for, I don’t have a Kindle, so I’m not sure. For now, I’m going to go ahead and use it for the pencil case, after all, it still meets the original need. I think I might like to try to make a small bag to match it. I’ll be back soon with that idea…
