This past couple of months, Sarah’s reading has really taken off. I would like to think it’s because we immersed her into the world of literature at such a young age, but honestly, God just gave her the amazing ability to decode, comprehend and understand the dance of letters and words at such a young age. I think Andy and I can both pinpoint the year that we took off on the reading bug jet (my jet had a delay by a year, but we all catch up in the terminal, if you know what I mean), and it’s so fun to see Sarah’s caught the bug, too! She’s been downing (against my better judgment) Junie B. and friends, some Little Prairie stories, and (again, against my better judgement) some Hannah Montana drama.
I must add here that when I taught second grade, one of my students loved the Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey. Up until then, reading was laborious, a chore, something we had to pry out of him. His mama picked up one of these books for his fourth grade brother, and J was listening in and wound up taking over some of the chapter book on his own. Who was his mom to stop him from reading– even if the main character was, ahem, less than appropriately dressed? This is how I feel about the content of Junie B. and Hannah. The language has opened the door to some good discussion for how to 1. Talk with proper grammar and finishing off the entirety of words and 2. Discuss the respect factor on how we treat adults and people in general. Both Junie and Hannah could use some lessons, too, I think.
Anyway, back to my little reading bug. Last week, we went outside to enjoy the afternoon sunshine AND warmth (hello, November, thank you for the extended heat, we love it), but Sarah took out her book and pulled out a stool and proceeded to polish off the last few chapters in her book while the other girls and I played with chalk, bugs and weeds.

She has a love for new bookmarks, too. This one is a slap wrist bookmark from school- she thought she was pretty snazzy slapping it on… We’re just so proud at how well she’s doing. I hope she can get this excited about the Pythagorean Theorem someday.

Reading is soooo much fun! How great that your daughter has realized the joy of it too! Thinking back, Mae really took off last year with reading as well. Maybe it’s a 2nd grade thing?!
Oh Sus! I love this! Maya has just started reading and it’s simply amazing hearing her. I love the shot of her doing a backbend off the stool! hee hee!
Oooh, these are some wonderful photos, Susie.
I think there are sooo many books that some of the ones that are not all a mama would dream are washed in a stream that is overflowing with ideas. And, some books, often the ones of, well shall we say, better quality, are the ones that stay with a person.
You’re a good mama!
That’s so awesome Susie. I didn’t catch the reading bug until the Harry Potter books. I hope that my girls catch that bug a lot sooner. We read the bible to them every day and I try to get so e reading throughout the day. Kayla lives to hear her daddy’s voice and at this moment Jennifer like the pictures but like the taste of the books more ( she but everything in her mouth…teething).
Hypotenuse = square root of Leg(2)+ Leg(2) LOL
I love it! I’ll be able to help her, YEAH!
I love that middle photo. And good job on the reading! It’s makes things so easy when they can read and LOVE it.
I LOVE IT! It makes me so happy inside.
